I can't see any pictures listed, Judy. (I can get to the page as I
have a Yahoo login, but I don't see any pictures). Do you have,
perhaps, a direct link to one of the pictures that I can try?

You have to sign in at the top of the page near wear it says Yahoo Photos.
If you're not a member of Yahoo, you'd have to sign up (not too bad a
process) and then you could access the pictures. Sorry

Wow! What great pictures! Obviously Oscar and Felix are bigtime buds. I LOVE
that one of Oscar on his back in the kitty tree tube. What a kill!!! And the
shot of Simba's tail is great. The ones by the patio door...well, just a lot
of really great shots.

It's hard to say without seeing the cats in "person", or without some
other photos, but I don't think they're overweight from what I'm
seeing in those pictures. If they were to gain weight, then perhaps,
but as they currently appear, I *definitely* wouldn't call them
"enormous", as your vet referenced their weights to be.

I think I'd get the opinion of another veterinarian if I were you.

They didn't look huge to me, either.  I'd go by how they feel.  Can you
feel their ribs?  You should be able to get a gentle feel for them when
you run your fingers down the side of their chests, but not too clearly.
How about their vertebrae?  Can you feel them but not clearly
articulated?

Especially with Felix's beautiful long fur, it's hard to tell anything
by looking alone.

Priscilla
Judy F - 18 Jan 2004 21:54 GMT
Thanks for checking them out! I can feel Oscar (black one) and Jessie (grey
one), but not Felix (Long Hair) 's ribs! I'm not too worried yet, but if
they keep growing at the rate they're going....

Sadly, Kimba (the white cat) died 2 years ago of complications of IBD. We
adopted him when he was a year old. His family (the shelter told me the
husband was crying when he gave him up...) "had" to get rid of him because
they were having a baby or something. When we finally got him he was living
in the basement of the shelter with the other "unadoptable" cats. He was
always very aggressive to non family members (not to us, except when he
slept on my pillow and insisted on having his paw over my head or arm-
always on top...). He terrorized anyone who he didn't know( one electrician
refused to come back) .... and he ate non-stop. All of this, I think was
related to that early abandonment of someone he had a strong bond with. I'm
sure the stress and overeating contributed to his death. He had an
endoscopy,  to confirm the disease, and was being treated, but he just went
downhill despite all our efforts, stopped eating and eventually died way too
young at only 8 years old. He was a wonderful guy, with more personality
than most people. He is greatly missed. And, yes, he weighed about 18 pounds
and was really overweight :)! Sorry for the length of this post, but Kimba
deserved it!

would get themselves educated before abandonning companion animals for
totally baseless reasons.  *sigh*

I hope the shelter refused to adopt to these pigs. And we're supposed
to be the "most intellectually evolved" creatures on Earth. <derisive
snort> I've never met an animal I didn't like (even my parents' big
fat rat bastard snowshoe Siamese basketball who can't decide if he

How sad. The shelter was in a lousy position and did the best thing,
IMO. I can't fathom surrendering a pet because it was "too old".

My Alex (the one who died in August) was left at the humane society
at one year of age because his owners were *moving* and apparently
never considered taking him along. I was disgusted, but their loss
was my huge, wonderful gain. Alex was friendly as all get out, but he
was also an aggressive bastid when the mood struck him, so I know
exactly what you mean WRT kitties who strike fear into the hearts of
humans. ;-) I even had a vet refuse to examine Alex unless Alex was
sedated. I didn't sedate Alex, I didn't let the vet examine Alex, and
I never went back to that vet.

I believe that once in a while, an animal gets lucky (although it may
not seem like luck initially) and is given up by a crappy owner so
that s/he gets a better owner instead. Sounds like Kimba was one of
those.

Thanks for your kind words , I think they go right back at ya! Funny, when
you told the story about Alex and the vet who wanted to sedate him I
remembered that Kimba was quite a handful at the vet too! Once he refused to
come out of the carrier and they actually had to unscrew the top to get at
him. The whole exam was done with him under a blanket, yowling as if the vet
was killing him. Everyone stared at us when we walked out of the examining
room. heheheheh ;)

I'm convinced that all white cats look chubby, but really aren't.  And I'm
not just saying this because people say my very white cat is fat.  It's
really true!  You know, the white fur adds 10 pounds to a picture :-).

Hey!  No cheating!  A cat must be naturally white in order to be a member of
the "I'm not fat, I just look that way" club.  We must blackball all other
colours.  It's a very exclusive club, doncha know :-)!

You could make your own club, but then you'd have to call it something else.
How about the "Faux Fat" club?

I'll have to discuss it with Kitty.  She's the Grand Pooba (sp?) so she gets
the last word in all things.

> If Oscar's in it, it'll have to be the "Fat But Won't Admit It" club.

Oh, no!  It's probably the "I'm not fat but other people's eyes are big"
club.  Or the "Who the hell cares if I'm fat, just give me more food" club.
I think Kitty really belongs to the latter.

Sometimes I call her "Fatso catso" or "chub chub".  She doesn't seem to
mind, but she could be harbouring some ill-will towards me and will one day
claw me to death and eat my remains.  Who knows!

See how thick her head fur looks?

She used to shed *a lot* but I changed her dry food (wet food is still the
same) and she doesn't shed nearly as much as she used to.  Perhaps that also
added to her fat look?  Or should I say, phat look? :-)  My cat's the
coolest, doncha know!

So, ya, that's it...  Thicker, more luxurious fur!

Shhhh, don't tell anyone, but it's Science Diet Maintenance.  Not only has
her shedding decreased, but her excrements don't smell much at all (she did
go through a transition period where her urine was very stinky, though!).
She also seems to have a lot more energy now, but that could be due to a
slight weight loss (although she seems even more energetic now that she was
when she was at an ideal weight).  She has done very well on SD but YMMV.  I
know other cats have not done so well on it.

Funny, I just bought Wellness and Science Diet to see about switching my
cats to a "healthier" diet. (They'd prefer to live on Friskies Dental Diet
which I understand is like junk food for cats...). I'll let you know how it
goes....

They look fine, to me, weight-wise.  At least going by these pics.   Many of
which are awfully cute. :-)

Thanks so much for all your comments. I think my vet was just being an
alarmist about their weight and I'm just going to keep watching them (no
hardship there, they're so funny) and see how they continue to grow!

They are sooo cuteaand they look like they're so happy in each other's
company.

No way do they look overweight.  Once again, I question the competance
of any vet that would label either of them "enormous".
