Hi! I'm hoping someone can help me. My friend's Grandma just passed. Now
my friend
has Grandma's house.
I guess Grandma had a few cats & couldn't
get around real well. There must have been
spraying going on or cats not using the box
all the time.
The place smells dreadful. She is going to
remodel, but in the meantime would anyone
have suggestions as what could be used to
clean floor tile & paneling in the kitchen that
may make the smell more "tolerable".
I'm thinking that a regular supermarket cleaner
isn't going to help much.
Only lucky thing is we were able to find good
homes for the cats.
Thanks,
J

Try one of the enzyme cleaners.

I would clean it up well with an enzyme cleaner and then use Febreze. I
swear by it even on surfaces that are not fabric.

So happy to hear the cats found new homes! I use something called "Nature's
Miracle" which is an enzyme cleaner. It gets most of the urine smell out!

Thank you to all who took the time to respond.
Your input is appreciated. This is such a
helpful, nice group here.
Peace,

Nature's Miracle works, I also recommend vinegar or vodka. Febreze
can cause respiratory problems in animals, so be sure not to spray any
bedding that will be used by animals in the future with it.
Vinegar works especially well if you are washing clothes that have
been 'enhanced', but I wouldn't use vodka in the washing machine.

I remember the controversey a few years ago re: Febreeze. Were there any
follow-ups, or studies done? I recall some animal welfare org. endorsing the
product after the allegations surfaced, but then the topic wasn't brought up
again. (I never much liked the stuff; I thought the fragrance was too strong &
offensive)

OK, now you got me reading, I wasn't aware that they had ultimately
cleared Febreze for use with dogs and cats. It's still not
recommended for use with birds, but what kind of crazy fool would have
cats and birds? Oh, wait, that would be me, a few years ago anyway :)

If you find anything, let me know! I'd be interested too. Also, IMO, just
because one organization endorsed the product doesn't necessarily mean it was
deemed safe. I don't have any scientific info, just anecdotal info. from
reading the newsgroups. It seems that an awful lot of people had some bad
experiences with the stuff back then. Could have been elderly or ill cats, I
don't know.

Personally, I think the enzyme-based cleaners suck.
Instead, I recommend ODOKLEEN to remove any urine or feces (it
requires lots of rinsing, though - a wet vac works wonders for this),
and then treating the area with ODOKILL or NODOR to remove the odor.
I have yet to find an odor which is not removed using NODOR. ODOKLEEN
and ODOKILL are available through pet supply stores. NODOR is made by
Nu-Scents in Knoxville, TN, USA. They are a very small company and do
not ship outside of NA. Their product can be ordered in the US by
credit card by calling 1*(800)*262*9366. They ship via UPS. They are
very nice people.
And no, I'm not associated with either company - just a very satisfied
customer. I have two dogs, two cats, two snakes and a turtle and am
fanatical about keeping everything clean. I also worked for a
high-volume feline specialty vet, and used NODOR to kill tomcat spray
on numerous occasions. The stuff is awesome.
good luck,
-L.

Could you please post some pictures of your snakes? Would love to see them. :)

Wow! Thank you so much for all the info. here!
Someone actually told me to get some Febreeze. Now glad I didn't! Didn't
realize it
may not be good for the pets... I didn't buy it
because I thought it wouldn't help the current
use I need it for.
I think I will check out some of the products that
have been listed. It's good to know what has
worked for others before spending all the money. None of the cleaners
seem to be real
cheap!
Hope it's o.k. if I "lurk" once in awhile. You all
seem so nice here. Maybe one day, I may be
able to offer some "help" to someone else.
Sincerely,
Janet
