I have an all black cat with a very sleek coat. I brush him regularly, and
when I do, he seems to have dandruff all over his back. Does anyone else
have this problem? Is it dandruff?

Yes both of my  black cats have this same problem, but I dont' know what to
do about it, either so I can't be any help, hopefully someone else will read
this and know the answer!! I don't brush them, though...they are short
haired.

One of my two black cats has this problem every winter.  Last year I started
adding the contents of derma-caps(?) into her canned food, but I don't think
it made a tremendous difference.  She doesn't seem to be trying to scratch
any more than normal.

Yes, it is dandruff. All cats can have dandruff, it's just that it's
much more noticeable in dark, sleek cats. However, if you look at the
brush after you brush any cat, you may see flakes.

Dandruff can be perfectly normal in a cat, but it can also be
indicative of health conditions. How old is your cat? Has the amount
of dandruff increased?

As long as the cat gets a clean bill of health from the vet, to
reduce the amount of dandruff, you can try adding small amounts of an
omega3 supplement (fish oil) to his food to see if it helps. Also,
switching to a canned-food diet if he's a dry-food eater can assist
in mitigating the dandruff.

Also, see these:

Thanks for the responses! Laura, He's a two year old male with a sleek black
coat that's always had a little dandruff. Just saw the vet about 2 weeks ago
for his annual check-up and he is in very good health. I read the two sites
you recommended and am going to try brushing him more regularly. Also I
might try some fish oil or safflower oil as suggested. We're in the
Northeast in the midst of a terrible cold snap and the heat is on constantly
and it's very dry in here. That may be contributing too!  Thanks for the
help

Ah, I'm in NYC, so I know exactly what you mean about the air.
Cripes, I left Michigan to get away from this stuff! ;-)

Glad to hear that your cat is healthy; I'd say that your best bet is
to follow the route you've outlined above. :-) You might also want to
consider some additional portable humidifiers, if even just in your
bedroom- my cats and I sleep much better when the place is about 40%
humid, and their fur looks much better, too.

I'm closeby in Westchester! It has been unbelievably cold! The humidifier is
a great idea, I've been talking about getting one for awhile... Now maybe
I'll motivate myself to get one! Thanks again for all your suggestions :)

Westchester, CT, or West Chester, PA? (I'm assuming CT). If I wanted
weather like this, I'd have stayed up north! ;-)

You won't regret the humidifier, especially if you suffer from any
kind of sinus/nasal issues.

Westchester, NY! I'm allergic to (can you believe this) my cats!!!!! I have
an air purifier for my bedroom, and have just ordered one for downstairs,
but I think a humidfier will be a welcome addition!

Doh! Too many Westchesters! :-)

I'm also allergic to cats; I have about a half-dozen air filters, two
ionic doohickeys, and two humidifiers. Plus fans. My apartment is an
ode to modern technology. ;-)

What about medication? I take clarinex and Rhinocort Aqua nasal spray. They
really have stopped the constant sneezing and heloped with the inability to
breathe!

Judy, I am also allergic to cats. I love Claritin! I hate swallowing
pills and so use the
syrup for kids. One little dose every 24 hours and I'm fine! Works on
dust and mold
for me, too.
Judy F - 17 Jan 2004 22:05 GMT
I used to use Claritin, but eventually it stopped working, so now I'm on to
Clarinex, which my allergist said was very similar in formula! What we do
for our kitties!!!!!

I tried Zyrtec too, but it didn't work as well for me as the
Claritin/Clarinex group.

I hated Zyrtec! It wired me out and made me jittery. My system told me
it was overkill. It made me feel so weird I can't remember if it
helped my allergies!
Judy F - 18 Jan 2004 17:12 GMT
Clearly we can cross off Zyrtec! We'll just have to stick with Claritin and
Clarinex- they make me feel totally normal, not drowsy and I can breathe
too!

Claritin worked for me for about a year, then it lost effectiveness,
so now I'm on the Allegra and AllerX.

Holly had this problem, but her vet said she is in excellent condition.  She
is also a black cat (beautiful, glossy fur), and dandruff will be much more
obvious on them -- other cats may have the same (or more) dandruff, but it
won't be noticed because the color of the dandruff may be disguised by the
color of their fur.

I said Holly "had" this problem.  About a year ago, I changed her diet to
almost-entirely canned food.  She and Duffy both get Wellness canned and
Felidae canned.  Holly's fur became even more luxurious, and I noticed after
a few weeks that she now has almost no dandruff.  That came as a nice
surprise -- it wasn't something that I expected when I made the change.
