Are there any other cats out there that don't like catnip? My cat Isis seems
to really not care for it. Jade is ok with it but not addicted.

It may be the catnip. My cats like certain brands, but
don't care for other brands. I suspect that some companies
just sell crappy catnip! Try other brands to see if
you can find some they like.

Which kind of catnip do you use?

I was afraid you'd ask! Right now the catnip I have is
in a bag without a label, so I can't tell you the brand.
And I don't recall the other brands I've used. (The stuff
I have now is crap.)
Sorry I can't be more help. Just experiment!

Our Maine Coon just loves shreaded, dried cat-nip, but only from the
box.. He sticks his head in the box, eats a little of it, rolls on the
floor with it, etc. But we have a catnip toy that's basically a piece of
cloth tube filled with in tied off like a sausage, that he *almost*
absolutely ignores.. Could it be that he can't smell it enough (*I* can
smell it, and I'm not a cat!), or the freshness (the catnip box is sealed)

Now that I think about it, I think it was "Heart's" that my
cats loved. It came in a pink (I'm pretty sure) box.

Hartz? Yeah, I think that's how it's spelled!

Hartz products compared to others is like holding K-Mart compared to
Macy's.

I agree when talking about most of their products (flea control, etc.),
but my cats like their catnip.

Kami is totally disinterested in catnip. I've heard that Siamese are
unaffected by it. She's half Siamese.

My three cats love catnip. They go to the cabinet where I keep it, and try
to get it out themselves! When I give it to them they roll in it, eat it,
play with each other, get the munchies... hmmmm regular little pot heads....

It's estimated that about a third of cats do not respond to catnip. The
response is partially genetic and inherited; cats from certain lines will not
have this trait. So yes, there are plenty of cats that are not interested in
catnip. Kittens under the age of 12 weeks do not usually respond either.

Every cat I ever had loved catnip, until I got my sister and brother Snowshoe
Siamese, Mickey & Daisy. They are a few weeks short of one year, and they
couldn't care less about it. I bought some nice fresh catnip, very aromatic,
and they turn there nose at it. Now, I read on these boards and some of the
other responses, that up to 1/3 of cats don't respond. I also read where
Siamese don't respond. So, I guess that's the answer, for you and me.

When I buy the commercial packaged stuff at the pet store, my cats
sometimes like it and sometimes they don't even bother with it. But
when I got some at the herbal medicine store, they went wild and really
got off on it. When I grew a big patch for them in the yard, they liked
it better than the pet store stuff, but not as good as the herb store
variety.
So I guess the lesson here is to find a dealer who sells a quality
product and stick with him, except in times of extreme drought when
anything will do.

that many cats don't respond. Thankfully, catnip is one of the easier herbs
to grow and harvest. If you allow some to mature to seed, you'll have it
everywhere. For a more attractive plant that works well in a perennial
flower bed, try cat*mint*, which has gorgeous blue blooms for much of the
summer. My ferals love to lay in it and smush it down.

Mine do too; and it's a very drought-resistant and hardy plant. I bought it by
mistake, thinking it was regular catnip. They rolled around in it all summer,
but weren't much interested in the dried stuff. It was a much more attractive
plant than catnip, I thought too.

How much are the seeds to grow catnip? Also can it be grown in a small pot
or do I need a planter?

A pack of seed is cheap, less than a dollar. A clay pot would be fine. You
might have better luck with bedding plants, which are seed that are already
growing a few inches tall, you just transplant them. They should be available
at any nursery by early spring.

Have you tried fresh or fresh that's been frozen? Neither of my cats
care for the dried version, so during the summer I'll bag it and toss
in the freezer for the winter. Some pet stores sell live plants this
time of year if you want to give it a try.

How long does catnip last in the freezer and do the small plants need to be
re-potted?

Frozen catnip lasts several months in the freezer. I can usually make
it through most of the winter here (Wisconsin) with the stuff I've
frozen. I imagine you might need to repot the small plants eventually.
. though I've never had one survive long enough to do so (indoors,
that is).

I read somewhere that about 30 percent of cats don't respond to it.
