Use of messbox

I've got a dilema with a new cat I just inherited.  Actually she is
old -12.  Problem - if I don't lock her up at night she poops on the
carpet in the living room.  She pees in the mess box with no problems.
If I lock her up at night, she occassionally poops in the mess box,
but mostly right next to it on the floor. (Fortunately it is tile in
the bathroom) I clean the box twice a day, so cleanliness isn't an
issue.  She had been an outdoor cat before, and I'm wondering if that
is part of the problem.  If it is, how on earth do I train her to use
it properly?
I've never had this problem before with any cat I've ever had.

Add a seond litterbox. Some cats like to pee in one box and poop in
another, and the fact that your cat poops right next to the box suggests
that she is that type.

Get a second litter (mess) box.  Some cats prefer to pee in one and poop
in another.

She may not want to poop and pee in the same box. Provide her with two.

Maybe you could try getting some dirt and putting it in there with the kitty
litter for a few days to see if she will be attracted to the smell of the
dirt. If she is used to going poop outside she might just not be used to
going in kitty litter i dont knw....

Thanks - I will give the dirt a try. Sounds like a reasonable idea. I
do have two litter boxes - one covered the other isn't.  She uses the
covered one and ignores the other box.
