Hiya ,
If any one has a minute, can you reply to  the laser declaw question
on alt med vet -:((
. The question is -
*Does anyone know about what it costs for a laser declaw surgery?  My
vet (Which does not do it) said she was not sure how much it was but
heard that it was "quite expensive".  I heard it was supposed to be
less painfull and heals quicker then conventional declaw surgery.*

Do you have to start the declaw debate all over again?  No one here is
going to give you the answer that you want.

Even so, asking this question here is like asking opinions of abortion on
soc.women.  It's a spectacularly good way to start a flame war.

Dennis,
I've been posting to this newsgroup for 3 years so I hope that people
know me well enough by now to know that I'm not trying to start a war.
I was asking for people to respond to the question on alt vet med ,
however I think the OP could be a troll as she posted about laser
declaw videos on another group.

My 7month old kitten just had her laser spay surgery today. I was amazed at
the cleanliness of the scar, no stitches, less blood and less pain for her.
The same vet was trained on laser declawing but there is no way in hell I
would have her declawed.

She started clawing the sofa a while ago so I went to the pet store and
bought a bottle of No Scratch by Pet Organics. It has the smell of garlic
and cloves and the cats ( I have two ) do not like it at all. Delilah (the
older kitten) has stopped scratching altogether other than her post and
Stella (the little one) is learning. My point is... I would rather spend $15
on a bottle of this stuff than put my girls through anything that isn't
absolutely necessary for their health. When my fianc? and I adopted the
kittens from the animal rescue, we agreed that we were taking on a
responsibility. With that responsibility comes compassion for our  little
family members. Painless or not, it isn't necessary if we are doing OUR job
in gently teaching them what is acceptable in our and their home and what
isn't.

Would YOU have surgery just for the hell of it or would you search out
alternatives?

Just think about it

Sorry , if I haven't made myself clear.
I'm asking if anyone can answer  the person Wheyface  posting on

I'm hoping you will be able to dissuade the person from doing this .

If they know the risks and know alternatives, and want to do it anyway,
there is little anyone can say that will change their minds.
Show them the usual - if they aren't dissuaded, they're just cruel
people who do as they want to the beings they're supposed to care for.
Only laws protect animals from people like that.

Well I certainlly think you made yourself crystal clear, Alison.  I guess some
people read a post quickly and don't pay attention???  Anyway, I'll make a
response to the person on alt.med.vet

Hi Lauren and Kaeli,
I think  it's important to say something even if the person
doesn't change their mind and one reason is because  other people
reading the post will think its ok to have their cat declawed.
I often wonder how many people all over the world read these messages.

Well, yeah, one should say something, but I assume people have already
pointed out why declawing is evil.
Silence is implicit consent, I agree.

I can't get the alt groups here, so I never end up going over there. I'd
never be off Usenet. *g*

I did make a post and I agree with you.  Even if it doesn't sink in with the
OP, it might with someone who is lurking.  I think declawing is one of the most
horrific things that can be done to an animal :(

Hi Lauren,
Thanks for posting. I'm sure it makes a difference. I usually give the
website links but that's not always enough.
After Mike's post I thought I'd better check out the OP and  I think
she is a troll-:(. Her odd name should have given me a clue.

I was going to have our kitten declawed but after reading these newsgroups
and doing research, I couldn't bear to do it.  I have leather furniture,
daycare kids and fabric wall coverings and I did not see how a cat with
claws could coexist.  Well, I have not had any major problems.  I purchased
2 ceiling to floor cat platform trees at  Walmart and a few scratching posts
and the kitty has almost exclusively used these to scratch.  In fact, after
climbing the platform tree, I found that her 'scratching' has decreased
significantly.  She has learned to be very careful with her claws when
playing.  This is an abandoned feral kitty that we took in at about 1 to 2
months old.

What a happy testimonial to giving a cat proper places to claw! Thanks for
posting.
