My wife and I have two cats, a black one who is two years and a white/grey
that is over a year.  The black cat mainly eats moist food, but will eat
hard food as a last resort.  The white/grey cat mainly eats hard food, but
will eat a little bit of the moist food.

They both sleep a lot, and run around chasing each other quite a bit, but
here's the thing...while the black cat is still a normal size for a cat, the
white/grey cat has gotten huge.  Her head is about the same size as the
other cat's, but her body is at least one and a half times as big as the
other's.

We do leave a bowl of hard food out for them to graze on, but we only put
out moist food out twice a day (once if the morning food isn't gone).  Is
this just a diet thing or could it be something else?

Thanks.

Are there any other symptoms other than the cat is getting heavy?? If not,
you may want to eliminate the availability of the dry food and feed dry food
and canned food twice daily. Also, you can switch to lighter variety of
foods for the heavy cat.

We have looked at symptoms of underactive thyroid, and this might be the
case since she is acting a bit more lethargic than usual (she is sleeping
now) and definitely seeks out the warm places to sleep.  She sometimes gets
too warm sleeping next to the radiators.  Can't really tell if her fur is
dry, but it's never really lost the kitten fluffiness...she doesn't have the
sleek fur of the black cat.

we are going to give a try to having the food available onl at certain times
of the day though.
thanks

Nope, cats don't become hyp*o*thyroid, only hyp*er*thyroid. The only cases I
know of for a cat to have an underactive thyroid would be post-thyroid
treatment (to combat overactive thyroid), when the levels drop too much.
IOW - an underactive thyroid could be secondary to something else, but
wouldn't occur on its own.  (Yes, w/ people it happens, but not w/ cats.)

If you think she's just too overweight & is acting kind of lethargic, the
best bet would to have your vet take a look, if s/he hasn't already.  Even
if nothing's wrong - other than being overweight, the vet could probably
give you advice on a diet.

Btw , I also had a hypothyroid cat who took Thyroxin every day to correct
it, *but* it was due to a latent side-effect of hyper-T treatment
(thyroidectomy; she couldn't stay on Tapazole due to a liver problem).

Cathy.....Squeeks is 11 years old and was diagnosed with it when she was 2years
old. She also has alot of minor genetic problems and the vet figures that the
hypothyroid is one of them. The vet was shocked that she tested hypo because
you are right that it is very rare in a cat. She takes Soloxine every other day
to control it and gets blood work done every year to make sure that nothing has
changed. If you find a good link on it. I would appreciate if you could send it
to me...Thanks:)

I also have two cats brother and sister. The female is over weight and the
boy is normal. The females head is the same size as the boys shes just large
and her head seems to be disproportional to her body.
