Many people in this group have said that Vaseline can be used instead of
Petromalt for hairball control.  I have two questions: Is it really safe to
feel regular Vaseline  petroleum jelly to cats?  Will they really eat it?
(I know that will vary from cat to cat, but do most cats actually eat that
stuff?)

Thanks.

You can also give olive oil or mineral oil, mix a little, 1 tsp, into their wet
food once a day if they need it all the time for constipation or bad hairballs.
You could also get tuna packed in oil and give them a little of that oil which
is vegetable oil. They will definitely eat that oil. This is assuming your cat
isn't fat and is otherwise healthy.

Yes, it's safe.  If you read the list of ingredients for Petromalt - or
Laxatone, you'll see that it's the exact same stuff as Vaseline, just w/
flavoring added.

Yes, and yes. (In addition to what Mary said.)

I don't like giving by-products of the petrochemical industry, so instead I
give butter or olive oil.  Also make sure to regularly brush your cat.

The label on petromalt lists petroleum jelly as one of the ingredients.
If you give Petromalt you give petroleum jelly.  I had one cat that
would lick petroleum jelly from my finger.  Others I would smear a dab
on their whisker pads where they would lick it off.  They didn't like
it much.

I had a couple of cats who absolutely loved it.

My cat shows virtually no interest in eating anything but his cat food, but
he eagerly licks Petromalt from my hand if introduced when he's starting to
get hungry. He shows much less interest if not hungry.
