Does the new JCPenny commercial bother you?

No1 - 17 Dec 2003 04:01 GMT I'm just wanting to get the thoughts of people here. I know this group is very vocal towards "cat issues" and I am a little bothered by the new JCP commercial, but not enough to write, etc.
If you are unsure what I am talking about, they seem to have this new Wednesday sale or something like that and the lady hears on the radio that it's Wednesday. She is in the middle of opening a can of cat food with the cat watching her. She grabs her purse and leaves to go shopping, leaving the cat to stare at the cat food can in the automatic can opener. The commercial ends with her feeding the cat, but I noticed off to the side that there is a shopping bag. Thus, the story would go that she left to go shopping, not feeding the cat, and fed the cat upon returning.
I just wonder how much flack they would get if they showed a baby in a high-chair and the mother preparing the food only to abandon the child to go shopping and return later to feed the child. Not having any children yet, we view our two cats as our children and I'm the type of person who would go to great lengths to protect them. Watch out evil cat...
(if you're wondering WTF about evil cat, read my other post)
Cat Protector - 17 Dec 2003 04:12 GMT This is a bit disturbing. I think I would tend to be bothered by something like that as well. Of course, in my household if I left a can of cat food sitting on the counter at least opened and with me nowhere around my cats would no doubt be able to get to it and I'd come back to an empty can. I have yet to see this JCP commercial but it sounds a bit disturbing. I hope they come out with a posting that says "make sure you feed your cat before leaving," or something similar. I'd write to JCP and see what they say.

But I agree...the cat would not have just sat there and looked at the can. If they did and didn't move the whole time, then that cat isn't too bright. I know my cats would have gotten on the counter, pawed at the can until it fell on the floor and would have eaten.

Some humans really want to try and prove dogs are smarter than cats with commercials like that but it just isn't going to happen. BTW, I think I should mention here they are thinking of doing antoer Cats & Dogs movie and calling it Cats & Dogs 2: Tinkle's Revenge. Perhaps this time they'll get it right and actually make the cats the good guys. Of course that is wishful thinking given that either the director or producer is in fact a dog lover.

The movie was cute, and besides all cats are evil and plotting to take over the world (I know my Isis cat is. That whole timid act is just a front). I know that inside her little head she's plotting ways to get rid of me and those other obnoxious humans. After all, cats are the superior species and deserve to dominate the world! Mwahahahahahaha.
Alice (Gambit on the other hand couldn't be bothered.. he thinks she needs to lay off the catnip and ignore those stupid humans).

Ever see the "Far Side" cartoons where the dog tries to trick the cat into a situation where he can trap her by putting up signs like "Cat Fud" with arrows pointing her into closets? Or the captioned "Dial-a-cat," where he is sitting in an arm chair on the telephone, and the cat is saying (in a bubble) "I'm a big, far, furry, toothless Persian, sitting on my porch all alone, and my humans are not home ..."

Cathy Friedmann - 20 Dec 2003 01:50 GMT > lol > [quoted text clipped - 7 lines] > Persian, sitting on my porch all alone, and my humans are not home > ..." Yep. :-) The one I saw w/ the "Fud" signs is leading the cat into a clothes dryer, IIRC. (The dog's watching, hiding behind the washer.)
I have a Far Side mug that shows one cat offering another a box of chocolates. The host is pointing to the chocs in the box, saying "These little ones are mice... these must be hamsters... & oooh, these are gerbils!"
Then there's the deer cartoon, with one deer pointing to another deer's chest - where there's a bull's eye target, saying, "That's one hell of a birthmark you have!"
Although in reality I'd never condone the ideas behind these cartoons, I can still find them funny - I see the absurdity & humor of them.

Wendy - 17 Dec 2003 12:18 GMT It doesn't really bother me. The cat will still be just fine an hour or two later when she finally gets around to feeding the cat. A [small] child on the other hand shouldn't ever be left alone for any reason but certainly wouldn't starve to death if they had to wait a while for lunch.

It would bother me if she like, kicked the cat to get it out of the way or something. Crap on TV like "Jackass" and all that "reality" (yeah, right) TV bothers me a LOT more.

She grabs her purse and leaves to go shopping, leaving >the cat to stare at the cat food can in the automatic can opener. Why couldn't the cat jump up on the counter and eat out of the can? Really...there are more important things to worry about in life--it's just fictional. A few hours isn't going to hurt the cat one way or the other.
>The >commercial ends with her feeding the cat, but I noticed off to the side that >there is a shopping bag. You really shouldn't be offended at that.
No1 - 17 Dec 2003 17:49 GMT I'm not saying that I didn't like the commercial or offended. And when I say little bothered, I'm talking like less than 1% of my being. My point was that they would not have been able to get away with leaving a child unfed for a couple of hours. A child too, would not starve to death in a few hours. I guess my view is that all life, human or otherwise should be treated equally.
Now excuse me while I go eat some fish, a burger and chicken. :-)

I think these things should be taken seriously - subconscious messages like these make people think it *is* ok to neglect or abuse the cat - afterall, it's "just a cat". I just find it - I dunno, disrespectful, I guess.
