One of my cats does this when she's nervous... like when I'm holding her (she *hates* that!), trimming her claws, etc.,

You might take a look at her diet. What is she eating?

I'm with Laura. No offense, but a cat who poots... would be sort of cute
if it wasn't so noxious though. =^^=
Perhaps cut back on the canned food? Another consideration, what was her
diet like before you took her in? If this is a drastic change, keep in
mind that a drastic alteration in diet can cause diarrhea, so a semi
change (mix canned and kibble) may cause flatulence?
But like others have suggested, check with a vet if you're not sure.

I also have a cat who has done this since we got him. My vet said it was
diet-related. I know sometimes the wet food will make it act up more.
Depending on your cat's age, you might want to just ask your vet what diet
is specifically best for your cat. A phone call to the vet would probably
do. My cat (age 15 months) is now on a totally dry-food diet.

I agree it wouldn't hurt to talk with a vet. Sometimes changing the food
causes it too. One of mine gets "gassy" but I only know that because teh vet
noticed. She suggested all wet, but I think it may depend on the cat. She
seems happy though?

Okay, this is rude of me, but I just can't stop giggling about this.
Sorry. I've never had a gassy cat, either, so I don't really know
what to offer in the way of advice, either.
