My roommate and I have 8 month old cat in our apartment. We just moved him
down here about 2 weeks ago, and he seems to have adjusted quite well,
however we just recently started having a problem with him pooping just out
in front of his litter box. He pees in there with no problem, and looks
like he poops in there occasionally.
We were wondering if there is anything anyone on the group can think of as
to why this strange behavior has started. If it helps, he has a covered
litter box, probably 18" high, and it has a door in the front for him to get
in, and box gets cleaned frequently.
Thanks

I would eliminate the cover. Many cats prefer litter boxes without covers. I
would provide two boxes. Many cats do not like to poop and pee in the same
box. Thirdly, if these do not work, have him checked by a vet to rule out a
medical problem.

One of my cats occasionally pooped right next to the box when she was young.
I wound up putting 3 litter boxes in a row for her to use. That worked.

I had the same problem with my older cat for years and years, tried
everything. What ended up working was to lessen the amount of litter
in the box -- my husband and I were astounded when we heard that
could be the problem, and we tried it, and it worked. Well, 99%
worked. It also helped (I think) to take away the newspaper from
around the box. I think Princess saw that as part of her litter, but
now that it's just clean white tile, she goes in the box. Of course,
we have to sweep more. :-)

We had this problem with one of our boys - a particularly large orange and
white tabby. The solution was simple - uncover the covered litterbox. No
problems

I think they don't like feeling trapped in there. Also, the cover
makes it easy to forget to clean the box.

Same here. When I got here from the humane society 6 weeks ago she started
out using the box. Then decided to go just outside the box or nearby.
Urinates in it ok. Box cleaned daily. 2 year old female with no other
behavior problems.
