hello all

I couldn't find any FAQ's so I hope this is not repeating old stuff but I
need advice.

Due to where I live, next to some abandoned ground and green space in an
inner city area, I seem to have a steady stream of strays and feral cats
come by. As I had an elderly cat who couldn't use a catflap but rather a
hole in the door,  it was pretty much open house at mine in terms of food.
My old cat has died and two of the more regular strays have set up home to
some extent!

They demand so much food and I was happy to supply it but am now worrying
that I may overfeed them. I heard that strays can lose the mechanism to
control their food intake and as I have a problem in that direction myself,
I need advice. They both now seem healthy well built toms [ unneutered but I
can't handle them to to bring them to a vet - they are not that tame].
So - how much food, cans or pouches should they need in a day?
One particularly keeps up a barrage of begging all day. My previous cats
just ate what was needed , an awful lot less than this!

any advice much appreciated

regards

Hi ,
Why not contact a feral rescue society and ask their advice.  They'll
also be able to trap and neuter them for you .

[it bounced anyway
boy - been using Usenet for years and still make an a*** of myself

reply was:]

thanks for these - more interesting than the links I found on google. I was
interested in the stuff on taming a feral - I didn't know it was possible. I
named my main one "raptor" after the velociraptors in Jurassic park - due to
similarities in temperament! I have on and off looked after cats for the 20
years I have lived in London, but all just happened - they turned up and I
fed them - most were tame and became very dear to me  but  I have realised
that I don't actually know much about cats and their health at all. thanx

 Hi poly ,
Lucky for the cats you feed them. You can learn a lot just by
reading this newsgroup. There's a  pet web page that has cat  book
reviews  and you can also order books from Amazon directly from it. I
can't remember  if it reviews feral cat books but you can do a search
on Amazon for one.

 Hi poly ,
My e.mail addy is mangled to stop spam . If you take out the X's
I should receive any private mail. There's  a small UK. cat group.  If
you want to pop in and say hello, click on  news:free.uk.pets.cats  It
looks quiet but you'll get replies if you send a post.

I would keep dry food for them all the time and feed canned food twice
daily.
