Peeing all over the place

Wendy - 10 Dec 2003 16:35 GMT Tiggy's not happy. She has peed in the bedroom, living room, bathroom and outside her box in the kitchen. She just went to the vet last week and doesn't have a medical problem other than the arthritis and just being old and crotchety. We have her on Cosequin and it seems to be helping - she's actually grooming herself again. I cleaned the carpeting with the stuff to remove the odor. I have a feliway diffuser running. I covered the spot she used in the bedroom and she just moved out into the living room to do her thing. I haven't caught her in the act but I'm almost certain it's her as Isabelle doesn't go in the bedroom (where it started) and the volume of urine is too large to be from Boots.
Any suggestions?

That would either confirm or eliminate her as a suspect. I've never used it, but your vet should know what it's called. Also, you might want to ask if it stains carpet or whatever. Good luck, Annie
Simon Fitzpatrick - 11 Dec 2003 10:46 GMT The best I got was Mu (RB) peeing into my video recorder and shorting out the electronics. Now that was cat film critic.
Admittedly it was a silly movie. But the reaction was worth it.

Now that she's feeling a bit better (cosequin's great stuff, isn't it?) perhaps you could try a new litter box, with fresh litter. Maybe she'll claim it as hers. I don't know if it'll work, but it's what I would try.

I'll have to try a new litter box. Should I put it near the old one or in a new location?

First try putting it in a secluded spot, and showing it to her. If she doesn't use it, you could try putting the new box on a spot where she's urinated, and then gradually move it to a more secluded spot if she accepts it.
If this doesn't work, don't give up! There are other options.

Wendy - 11 Dec 2003 18:15 GMT Can't give up on Tiggy just because she's an old girl. Although it would be nice if they made diapers for cats ;o) nah .... don't think that would work.

Actually, a couple of years ago I saw an article on helpful items for older cats. One of them was a diaper sort of thing for incontinent cats. I believe it was called piddle pants or something like that. You might try a search on the Internet. Annie

I guess I want to caution that this item is not a substitute for a vet exam and care if the problem has a medical cause. And I also would encourage all steps be taken to find any cause, medical or behavioral, for the problem and to find the solution. But it might help reduce damage in the interim and would be especially helpful for cats that for some reason (maybe nerve damage?) cannot control their urination. Annie

Oh the indignity of it all lol.
Actually not a laughing matter. She has a vet appointment first thing tomorrow morning. She peed again in the bedroom - in her bed. She can barely walk this afternoon. I noticed she looked a little stiff late this morning so I gave her a Prednisolone (5 mg.). It didn't help. By this afternoon she's hobbling if she moves at all. She doesn't seem to want to put any weight on the right rear leg and cries something fierce if I try to pick her up. Rats! and it seemed the Cosequin was really helping her.

If you have a heating pad or a hot water bottle, that might make her a bit more comfortable. I hope the vet can help.

Unless they did a urinalysis you can't assume she is fine, and even if they did one at the time, she very well could have developed a UTI since then. DON'T assume it's behavioral until you have definitively ruled out a UTI. For her sake, get her back to the vet ASAP and have her urine checked.
