Cat Who Chirps

Noreen Cooper - 08 Dec 2003 06:31 GMT At the risk of finding out a zillion of you out there have a cat who can do this, the feral cat I adopted is now 6 months old and has the most unusual talent: she *chirps* when she sees birds through the window. I'm not kidding you. The cat makes a bird-like sound. Really, how common is this? Do you think it has something to do with being raised out in the wild for the first 8 weeks of her life? I'm ready to send in the video to "Funniest Animal Moments."

I really think we need to see the video to decide! ;)

Maybe that's why they were so weird about being brushed... ;-)

Yeah, I think chattering is a good word.

Well, one cat - Herrie - does mmrrrppp greetings, but they've all chattered at birds (& some at squirrels).

That's almost all my cat ever says. When I first got her, I didn't even think she could meow since she didn't for weeks (and she was in my room during the entire acclimation period). Now she meows but usually only when near her (empty) food dish, and very very rarely otherwise. It's just "mmmrrrppp?" (and why does it always sound like a question?) or very intense stares in all other situations. And boy, can she stare!

Noreen Cooper - 09 Dec 2003 07:51 GMT : We've had some cats who did this. Usually when they see a bird outside the : window. We call it "cat chattering." I've read what they're actually doing is : practicing the killing bite they're going to inflict on the neck of the prey : (that's the purpose of the jaw action that accompanies the chattering). This is it exactly, Sherry. Yes, the jaw action accompanies the chattering but I do swear the sound is more like a series of several chirps. I would love to record her sound so that the experts here could tell me whether it is a real bird call imitation or within the normal range of "cat chattering" but I don't have the sound equipment to do so.
Thanks to everyone for the interest. It's been fun reading everyone's own unique cat responses.

If it's a "chittering" sound, it's what all my cats have done- jaw action and all. :-)

Barb - 08 Dec 2003 16:40 GMT The chirp is the cats' little bird call. They all seem to think that sound will get all the birds to come over to them!

Someone said that some cats do imitate vocalization - I'm so pleased to hear that!

Cathy Friedmann - 08 Dec 2003 22:01 GMT Is it a true chirping noise, or more like a chattering? If the latter, it's *very* common. Comical (to humans), but common. If she really sounds like a chirping bird, then it's worth the video. ;-)

And how much like a man to make it a grand announcement! Cheeks' greeting as she flies by is more like an aside. "Meh! Just me, carry on!"

That's pretty good. =^^= Our bengals - at least, the females - will sort of pause halfway through their meow for about .25 seconds, so you get a kind of "ma-ow" from them.

Joe Pitt - 09 Dec 2003 13:22 GMT Cats will do that when they see potential prey they can't get to. Some more than others. I have a Snow Bengal that goes crazy when the neighborhood Peacocks come around. I'm not sure where they live, but the wander around my house and 'torment' my cats by just walking by the window.
