Runt w/ Defective Intestines

My daughter _had_ to have the "little" kitten.  You know, the one half the
size of all the others.  The runt.

Well, turns out he has some sort of rather unpleasant intestinal thing going
on.  Left to his own devices, he has constant diarrhea and the poor thing
walks around with his back feet tucked in 'cuz his butt has got to hurt
something fierce.  We have found only one food - Hills Prescription Diet
t/d - which prevents the diarrhea.  The vet suggested we try this, as he has
had luck in the past with it with cats like this, the theory is that it's a
relatively high fiber kind of food, and somehow that helps.

Well, that was fine for a while, until said cat decided he was tired of the
same damn food day after day (can't say I blame him).  So he took to jumping
up on the counters, attacking people as they were preparing dinner, that
sort of thing.

Vet suggested maybe Hills w/d (same maker, different flavor) would work.  So
we tried alternating t/d and w/d, giving both at the same time (different
bowls, a smorgasbord kind of thing).  That sort of worked, though it was
clear that w/d did not give the same benefit as t/d.

Any suggestions on other brands/types of food to try?  Other methods of
dealing with this problem?

Thanks!
Chris

I'm with your daughter. My cat Jacob was the runt of his litter and
he's going on sixteen years old now, and the sweetest cat I've ever
had. :-)

I assume your vet has tested for parasites, FIV, FeLV, etc.? If not,
that should be the first thing you try.

I know that pumpkin, baby food prunes and even unflavored metamucil
can be helpful for cats with constipation; if it's fiber that the
kitten needs, these would be good sources. With the Metamucil,
though, make sure that the cat gets plenty of water. Also, Immodium
is available for kitties.

Just a quick cheer for "runts".  I got the little 1-pound sickly, scared,
pathetic kitten with a respiratory infection, and now a year later with care
and a whole lot of TLC he's 14 pounds and strong as an ox (and a love of a
personality).  Hang in there with the suggestions and it will pay off!

I'll cheer for runts too!  My Meesha was also the runt of the litter and she's
doing great now.

Which reminds me of a question I have- what is the opposite of the
runt of a litter? Jacob was his litter's runt, and his brother,
Gabriel (who died at age four) was the opposite- whatever it's
called.

Go with the other suggestions, and also don't forget to get some
unflavored pedialyte to help counter dehydration.

The diarrhea seems to be food-responsive.  You might want to try feeding
canned food to prevent dehydration and reduce fecal moisture.

Sometimes the digestive and absorptive functions of the small intestine in
some kittens don't develop as quickly as in others.  Thus the kitten's colon
can't compensate for the small intestine's inability the to absorb some of
the water (and electrolytes).

Has the kitten been tested for parasites?  Several fecal exams are necessary
to rule out parasites because worms and eggs aren't present in every bowel
movement.

A word of caution:  Make *sure* the kitten is *well* hydrated while feeding
high-fiber diets to avoid impaction of the fiber in the colon.

If I were you, I'd seek a second opinion.  Kittens are very vulnerable - so
problems must be resolved quickly.

Best of luck.

Forgive me if this has already been suggested.  There is another
perscription food (wet and dry) that works well.  I am afraid I don't
recall the brand, but the labeling is "low residue."  It is labeled for
adults but is fine for kittens in the short term.  We use it a lot during
kitten season, when little guys come to us with their guts all beaten up
from parasites and diet change.

Iams?

Also, I should have specified, the little bugger (who is currently sitting
on my lap with a dirty nose, he's a slob) is now about 1 1/2 years old.

Thanks!

Yes, Eukunuba(sp?), actually.  They have a number of perscription foods
available these day.

Funny!  Your little guy sounds like some of the youngsters we get, in our
rescue work.

What helps with runny eyes/noses sometimes is L-lysine, which can be
bought over the counter (we get ours at Costco).  We have a herpes guy
(Googly) who gets his L-lysine every day, crushed and put into a gelatin
capsule.  Works well powdered and sprinkled over wet food as well. (Googly
just got tired of it that way, unfortunately.)
