Cheeks is going crazy trying to watch the little birds who appear to
be trying to build a nest at the top of my office window. But the sill
is too shallow for her to sit comfortably so she has to stretch on tip
toe from the filing cabinet to watch them.

Any tips on good window seats for kitties that are simple to install
and lightweight and nice for the cat? I expect to go to PetSmart or
elsewhere later today and I would appreciate any advice. It is a
regular sized window. Thanks!

Mine like this one: http://tinyurl.com/y06x
This online price is better than what I paid in the store for it.  Too
bad I already used my free shipping promo earlier this week or I would
have added this.  What I like about it is that it is held by gravity
and leverage, and a small velcro strip on the sill.  I got some extra
velco from a craft store and can move the window seat to another
window to keep things interesting.  A second perch would be better,
though.  :)

Cheryl,

This works with a narrow sill?

Yes.  My window sills are ~2" wide.

I like the look of this one! I do want two, thanks for the tip. There
is a double window on the front wall, then a single window at the
side. I am thinking of a cat tree, too! (I just moved out a couch and
am rearranging.) Maybe I will look around online before I go to buy.

I just noticed that the online promotion and free shipping will still
apply for a second order for me so I might get another one, too.  The
food I ordered earlier this week came in about 3 days.  I finally
found one Shamrock will eat since his favorite canned food has been
discontinued by Petco and it isn't available anywhere else. Petreet
chicken and rice, he LOVED it.  I found he'll eat the Pro Plan chicken
and rice so that'll have to be a substitute.

Yeah, I have already tried feeding them that.  They don't like
anything that isn't a shredded consistancy.  :(

If you are looking for a good cat tree, I suggest you look at
www.createacatcondo.com.  I ordered my cat tree from them, and it is
wonderful -- very solid, sturdy, comes in various configurations, etc.  They
definitely aren't cheap, but the price is very reasonable for the quality.
Moreover, the prices include shipping, and their units are delivered fully
assembled.  You can see pictures of mine if you scroll down toward the
bottom of pictures in the second link under my signature.

I love this! Especially because you can design it your self and choose
the colors! Thanks!

If you decide to order from them, you may want to call their toll-free
number instead of just placing the order over the Internet.  They are very
good about discussing various combinations and making suggestions.  For
example, I had them add a foot to the regular 4-tier height, and they did
not charge any extra.  They also adjusted the height of each of the other
poles so that the bed height would still be in proportion.

We've got the same thing, and it is wonderful.  The cats really snuggle
into it.

Deb, tell me this, does the perch part sit up high, or at sill level?
I am having a hard time figuring out the logistics. The "legs" look
awfully long.

The perch sits at sill level. The ends of the legs sit against the wall
beneath the window, like a bracket would. The snuggly part on ours is
like a hammock, not hard.  The picture at this site is the one we have,
the cat napper window perch:

Hope this link works :)

Yes, came through great. Now I see how they work! Thank you.
Cheryl - 09 Dec 2003 23:02 GMT
I got the perch today that I showed you a link to the other day from Petco.
They changed the design (fancier "legs") and it doesn't fit my narrow
window sills as well as the old design did.  The part of the legs that lean
against the wall don't jutt out far enough and the perch is now on a
downward slant.  I'm going to have to send it back.  I might see if I can
find the old style in the store and ask if I can exchange it.

They have used it for years.

There are two basic configurations to the window seats I have seen.  One
type has a flat carpeted surface; the other is a faux sheepskin hammock-like
style.  We tried both at my sister's house, and the cats clearly preferred
the hammock-like style but they would readily use either.  Her cats are
heavy and put quite a bit of stress on the one that we installed in a higher
window (because they had to leap to it), so we reinforced that one by
placing a C-clamp at each side.

I just moved into a new apartment, and the window sills here are really narrow. My cats love to sit and look out the window, but right now the only way to do that is to stand on my bed and stretch up looking at the window. And that means they're standing right next to my head. I'd rather not get waked up in the middle of the night up cat feet on my face.

Anyway, I'm wondering whether any of these window seats will work with my window sills. There is a "step" in them and the entire window sill is only maybe 1-1/2" deep.

One of my cats weighs about 5 pounds, and the other weighs closer to 11 or 12 pounds.

The window seat I have requires a 2" wide sill for the velcro to stick
to.  Perhaps you could attach an extension to your sill?
