my cat keeps bringing home dead animals

I live in the country and my cat is left to roam free amoungst the
fields, although i think this is great for the cat it is not so great
for the animals around it.  It brings home, dead birds, rabbits, moles
and mice.  I know it is only doing what it believes is right, but it
is very upsetting to find these dead animals on my doorstep.
Jeannie - 01 Dec 2003 16:20 GMT
Actually, it's quite an honour to receive these little presents as it means
the cat is trying to share it's food with you but, if you don't like it, I
don't think there's anything you can do about it to be honest.  Our cats
used to bring half dead animals into the house and then proceed to torture
them to death.  Nature's cruel and that's just the way cats are. Short of
keeping the cat in all the time, there's no way to take the hunting instinct
out of the cat as far as I know.

You're lucky to have the pest control.  Our neighborhood used to have
3 outdoor cats but they've all left and now I'm having terrible
problems with indoor mice.

(g).. Do you not have your own cat/cats to take care of them?

I have indoor cats.  We live 10 yards from a highway, so I'm not
willing to let my cats outdoors.

Its not what I meant.  Don't they hunt inside the house?  You did say the
mice were indoors no?
I have two good hunters but I still have to put traps in those hard to reach
areas.  If it triggers, my male cat is the first one to check it out.

I prefered having it taken care of outside, before the mice ever reach
my house!   Just because my cats need exercise doesn't mean I want to
provide live PE trainers for them.
Mitch@hotmail.com - 02 Dec 2003 02:26 GMT
I can't wait to get the cat litter and scratch-trained.
There's at least one mouse creeping around here.

Traps haven't got it yet, but I know Lucy will.

 Hi ,

You could try limiting the times you're cat is allowed out. Cats tend
to catch more prey from dawn to dusk but it sounds like you have a
real hunter on your hands. I wonder how s/he catches the moles?

The common belief is that these are gifts to you. I have heard a
different view -- the dead animals are a training aid. Your cat is
simply trying to teach you how to hunt.

The sequence is always the same -- #1, bring you a dead meal, which is
supposed to be eaten. After this step comes #2, where the cat will
bring half-dead prey to you, which you're supposed to kill and eat.

We humans are sooooo stupid, however! It must be eternally frustrating
to our cats, that we never ever get beyond step #1.

Fascinating! Does this explain why my Cheeky keeps bringing me the
rubber snake? She is a housecat, and she fusses over it, howls over
it, then picks it up in her teeth and brings it to me whereever I may
be. If I am not in the house she brings it to my office or my bed. She
loves this game!

When my cats bring me "prey" they've "killed" (they're totally indoor and
over-indulged in toys), I always praise them as might hunters.  ;-)

I do too, that's why Cheeks does this, like, ten times a day. It is
hilarious when we are downstairs with company in the living room. You
hear her start "announcing" that she has captured her prey wayyyyyy
upstairs, then she kind of gurgles her way downstairs as it is
apparently hard to crow with a rubber snake in one's mouth. (This is a
cat that has trouble keeping up to 7 pounds, a lovely pale grey
mackeral tabby with the clearest light green eyes and white around her
mouth so you can see her Felix smile!) Then she zooms past, loping
like a lion, and drops it at my feet in the living room, and continues
on!. :-) Like "who WAS that masked cat!"  :-)

What toys does your baby bring you? Cheeks only brings the snake and a
rubber lizard, none of the other toys will do.

Does anyone here have a policy with Veterinary Pet Insurance?

They advertise (all of the paperwork I have from them) a 5-business day
turnaround time. They have had my claim now for a month (medical records
received two weeks ago, since I just took out the policy in August), and
every time I call I get a longer projection of when I'll get my
reimbursement.....I'm about ready to call the attorney general's office in
their state. I had a policy with them about seven years ago and was very
pleased. Anyone with them?

Thanks,

ava

What excuse do they provide on why they keep stalling? What do they say when
you point to the advertised 5-day turnaround - which should be legally binding?
Instead of talking to a low-level rep, get a supervisor on the line. Keep us
posted.

They tell me they are installing a new computer system. Eleven days ago I
said I wanted to talk to a supervisor, and I did. Now she is dodging my

I wouldn't waste any more time with them then.  I would contact whatever
department handles that in your state.

Would it be the Better Business Bureau and Atty General in CA (their
state) or my state? We have a very aggressive consumer-oriented atty
general in Minnesota. Can he intervene with a company in California?

Today, I got an email requesting my medical records....arrgggggg. I mailed
them a year's worth 3 weeks ago, which were acknowledged as received two
weeks ago. The woman called me today and left a voicemail saying the claim
will probably be completed by Friday..that there was a slight lapse in the
medical records..I have NO IDEA what they are talking about. She said, if
the claims supervisor felt he needed more info, she'd call me or my vet.
They photocopied every frigging thing in their office on this cat.

I've never dealt with pet insurance before.  You could try contacting your own
state's department first, tell them the situation and see what they recommend.
I know in my state we have a department of consumer and industry services, so I
would imagine you'd have something similar there.  I would think though that
you might have to contact the department in the state in which the insuance
company does business.  It would also be interesting to find out whether or not
they've had complaints about them before.  I think if it were me, I would at
least give them till Friday to see if they do in fact complete your claim.  You
could also try calling or emailing them and telling them that if your claim is
not processed in a timely manner, that you will have no choice but to seek
alternate action via your attorney.  Maybe that will get the ball rolling, so
to speak.

Good luck!

Lauren

Their state - start with the insurance licensing board.

No, the OP should contact his own state. The location of the company's
head office is irrelevant. To sell insurance in his state they must be
licensed by his state. And his state has the power to levy sanctions
against them, regardless of where they are located, up to and
including the right to pull their license to sell insurance in the
state.

Each state is organized somewhat differently, but the department to
call is usually called the Insurance Department or something close to
that, not the attorney general. You can probably find the correct
department just by searching through the state's main web site. Or
just call any local insurance agent.

I've had EXCELLENT experience with VPI paying claims with 2
unfortunate kitty illness.

The most important thing is to spell things out.

Submit your claim with copies of the Vet's chart notes w\ each page
initialed by the Vet

Go through you Vet Bill and compare it to the VPI Policy coverage and
write down the DX\Claims code & repayment scheduled amount for each
charge.

They have paid better than my own medical insurance in a very timely
manner.

Are you referring to the list of illnesses and what they pay that is
mailed to you with your coverage? I don't see anything for rechecks, and
it looks like the amount allotted for each illness is quite small--if you
are referring to the literature mailed to me when I took out the policy.

Also, it sounds like you have a very cooperative veterinarian.

> They have paid better than my own medical insurance in a very timely

How fast did you get reimbursed? It's been a month, and when I try to get
clear information it's nearly impossible. I finally found a woman working
on my behalf. She said that since I just took out the policy in August, it
is going through a claims review process--they want to be sure there was
no pre-existing condition. What's weird to me, is that she said she read
in the computer that there is a time gap between 8/02 and9/02. He was
innoculated in 8/02. Who takes a cat to a vet two months in a row? It
makes absolutely no sense to me. So, I;m sending in a note from that
hospital stating they didn't see george in october. I'm glad you've had a
good experience with them, but mine has been mass chaos. They keep telling
me they mailed a letter two me 16 days ago now, and it has never arrived.

Just be grateful the animals are dead and not being let loose to run
around your kitchen!  This happens in my house on a regular basis.

Consider yourself lucky! Your cat is spending a lot of time and energy
teaching you how to hunt and forage for your food! Such sacrifice,
even if it's too often misunderstood by these verrrry slow-witted
humans.
