An associate of mine informs me that a bengal male I sold her will
defecate in the litterbox, and as soon as he finishes cleaning up, will
promptly step out of the litterbox and urinate on the nearby floor. Their
vet isn't sure what to make of it (it's a behavior I didn't see in him
before the sale), and they are trying many things to figure out what can
cause this. One friend out towards LA says it could be hormonal half life
- although, the cat was 5 months when we sold him, and they promptly fixed
him.
For what its worth, he was raised with free reign of the home.
Anyone have any ideas on what this could be?

He may be one of those that likes a box for each.

I agree with what Karen said. Some cats "require" two litter boxes, and
that is what I would try first. You may also need to experiment with
placement. Since this cats seems to urinate beside the litter box, I would
first try to place the two boxes side-by-side (or, at least, in close
proximity).
