keshcatlvr - 21 Nov 2003 15:26 GMT I have two 1-1/2 year old indoor male altered cats, Mazik and Nudnik. Six months ago I sold my 2 br condo and moved into a 1 br apartment. We are allowed one animal. I still have my two.
But Mazik is going crazy here. He is climbing the walls, literally. He is jumping up onto the door jambs, knock over pictures from the book shelves, leaping up to look out the peep hole, howling at the door, etc. at 5:30 am.
I think the space is too small for him. Or for us. I have several different toys that I keep hidden and take out alternately to play with for diversion. Doesn't seem to make a difference.
I'm torn because I've had him since baby-hood. But I find myself feeling angry at him too.
I've been in animal rescue. I know what the deal is out there. I'm torn.
Please, if you are going to yell at me and tell me I am a BAD PERSON, don't bother replying. I just want REAL suggestions.
thanks.

Have you considered training him to leash and harness and taking him out for walks? He'd get more exercise, stimulation, and the joy of chasing bugs. LOL
My Rowan would go stir crazy if I didn't take her out.

P.S. no bugs here - it's WINTER~! Thanks.

> P.S. no bugs here - it's WINTER~! Thanks. Same here, but we have the next best thing - flying leaves! LOL
I have a dog, so I have to go out every day anyway. So if it's not below 0, Rowan comes with. She actually likes to go out, even in the rain and snow. She doesn't care. She cries to go unless it's below like 10 degrees - even if she just wants to go for 10 minutes, it's the highlight of her day. -- ~kaeli~ Why did kamikaze pilots wear helmets? http://www.ipwebdesign.net/wildAtHeart http://www.ipwebdesign.net/kaelisSpace

She's a happier cat this way and that makes the whole house function better (and I love to see her happy). She doesn't get to go when it's below 0, which happens for a couple weeks in the dead of winter, and she just picks on the other kids something awful 'cuz she gets mad!

[quoted text clipped - 7 lines] > Hi, thanks. I've considered it. My concern is that he will then cry to > go out on a regular basis. P.S. no bugs here - it's WINTER~! Thanks. What if he does? It sounds like you don't like him much at the moment. Six months is a long time to put up with an unhappy cat in a one-bedroom apartment, though, so I can see why he might be getting on your nerves. However--if you really want to keep him you will be willing to put some effort into making him happy. If not, I can see why you feel guilty for wanting to get rid of him, but don't know what to say about that. His reaction seems extreme due to a change like a one bedroom smaller apartment. Did you say he was neutered?
keshcatlvr - 22 Nov 2003 15:11 GMT Thanks for your insights. Beleive me, I know everyone has good intentions with their suggestions. I didn't get a dog. I got a cat. I didn't want the responsibility of taking a dog out. I thought there might be other ideas.

I'm just not sure what you're asking here.

>Please, if you are going to yell at me and tell me I am a BAD PERSON, >don't bother replying. I just want REAL suggestions. Get a floor to ceiling cat tree. I have a couple of them. I also have a utility cart in front of a big window so they can look out and then I have a bird feeder in front of that window. Get some interactive toys like feather on a stick toys and play with the cats. ________ See my cats: http://community.webshots.com/album/56955940rWhxAe Raw Diet Info: http://www.holisticat.com/drjletter.html http://www.geocities.com/rawfeeders/ForCatsOnly.html Declawing Info: http://www.wholecat.com/articles/claws.htm

keshcatlvr - 22 Nov 2003 15:20 GMT I made window seats made of wood (painted) that are screwed into the window frames. Bird feeders are not allowed here. I have a variety of toys: the feather, the fishing pole, the wire with cardboard thingys. He isn't that interested. But we do use them. He also has a lot of different balls, mice, assorted toys which appear and disappear. I alternate them. He is not interested in catnip or television.
Also, he does get time in the hallway every day. He explores. It's an inner hallway. He cannot get outside. He looks around and then lays at the door. The apartment is only about 400 sqare feet. We are talking tiny.

> tiny. Oh my god. Can't you move? I don't know how you can stand that, let alone two cats. There has to be an alternative.

Create a couple of perches where he can look out different windows.
Buy some SonoTube and create little tunnels for him to crawl around in.
Consider getting a drinking fountain with running water.
Install weatherstripping of some sort around the door to minimize the noise coming in from the hallway.
Consider getting some additional cat furniture or perhaps making high walkways or perches for him to enjoy.
Perhaps give him more of your own attention, play with him when you can

Vertical space can take the place of horizontal space and make it more fun and entertaining, plus more exercise for the kitties. Good luck!
