For anyone interested in feline health care a century or so ago or
veterinary history, I've transcribed the sections on breeding and on
health/veterinary care from the Frances Simpson's 1903 "Book of the Cat".

Some of the remedies are quite scary and probably toxic. The lack of
understanding of "Distemper" (catch-all term for what we now know as cat
flu, FIE and other viral illnesses) must have made outbreaks of the snuffles
of diarrhoea a very frightening event for owners and breeders. It is an
interesting comparison to modern high-tech methods of diagnosis and
treatment.

That is absolutely amazing and so very interesting. Thank goodness practices
have changed as we learned more about cats. I'm actually looking for an old
book on raising squirrels as pets. I'd love to find one like this one for cats.
I'll keep searching.

You might have to settle for a general book on "small pets". The
Simpson cat book tied in with the sudden craze for breeding and
exhibiting cats, so unless there were comparable fancy squirrel
societies/shows you probably won't find any specialist literature from
a similar era. If you widen your search to small pets, you'll
probably find books with chapters about squirrels. I'm not sure when
squirrels became popular as pets, but if you can find that out it
might help with a time-frame for library searches.
