How to make a cat sociable?

My girlfriend and I share a small condo. We inherited a cat from
one of her former co-workers.

The cat has really taken to me. In fact, the cat displays an extreme
loyalty to me I have never seen in cats. My girlfriend, on the other hand,
is pure evil to the cat. Whenever she gets anywhere near the cat, the
cat hisses, claws, or runs away. Needless to say, it is my girlfriend
that is a 'cat' person -- I only reluctantly agreed to get a cat because
my girlfriend wanted a cat so badly.

The cat is mean to other people too. We always have to warn visitors
to stay away from the cat. The cat especially hates children.

And yet, the cat worships the ground I walk on. The cat is constantly
flirting with me and trying to get my attention. Strange.

Anyway, this has been going on for a year now and we just can't figure
out a way to get the cat to be nice to my girlfriend. We've tried
just about everything at this point, including food and treat
bribes. My question: is there anything that I can do to domesticate
this cat, and if not: is anyone interested in adopting a really bizarre
cat?

Toss out the girlfriend and keep the cat.

In the long run, less maintenance and trouble.  ;-)

No fan mail please, this was posted in jest.

Sounds like a typical case of rivalry/jealousy!

Hah - sounds like my cat - and its the othr way around. My cat hates my husband
and avoids him like the plague. the very sight of him sends my cat running fast
and far
