IBKFergus doens't quite know how to display affection in the normal catly
manner of purring, head butting or, indeed, sitting quietly on a lap,
meatloafing.
That would be *far* too normal for IBKFergus.
Just as Fluffy, depsite being a d*g, is quite sure she's a cat, I suspect
that some strange brain cell of IBKFergus must thing she's perhaps a d*g in
heavy disguise.
Her way of showing affection is licking.
I thought it was kinda sweet when she stopped trying to kill The Hand for a
few seconds and gave me a thorough washing.
Shmogg will stoicly ignore having his ears washed by the young whipper
snapper
Cary thinks its *hilarious* to have his own fur washed by his own personal
slave cat, but won't sit long enough to be cleaned *properly*. If only I had
my camera available at the times when she does it, its the most endearing,
adorable, and precious thing. Cary and IBKFergus are bonded just like ><
that, and it warms my heart to see Cat and Yowlet so close.
But I think IBKFergus has got her work cut out for her when it comes to
Fluffy. Fluffy, being a d*g, is very very dirty. Totally contaminated.
Disgusting. She has *dog spit* all over her, and IBKFergus tries very hard
to get it all off. But she'll have to be there for *days* because although
Fluffy will sit perfectly still (except her tail, which thrashes wildly in
pure hedonistic pleasure), IBKFergus is a very small cat and Fluffy is,
well, a rather generously propotioned large dog. With excess dog spit to
spread around her person at that.
Still, a cat's work is never done, and one day, just maybe, if everyone just
sat still and submitted to a Proper Cleaning, IBKFergus may finally get the
Chapman Clan is a presentable state. That is, with a perfectly good layer of
dried Cat Spit on them.
I hope she never discovers dry cleaning!

Waffles used to do the same when she was small.

Is there any better way to be attired? ;-)

All three here are lickers. When I first visited Advocat, the adoption
group here, their practice was to put a cat you were considering into
your arms and watch the reaction.
Rhonda, however, did not exactly follow the program. As soon as her cage
door opened, while her sister ignored me, she LEAPED into my arms and
started enthusiastically licking my nose. OK. One owner selected.
The patterns changed over time, although all three still do it. Mr.
Clark, the alpha cat, very clearly conveys affection. Indeed, when he's
confronted with an upset human, he will stand on their lap (he's big),
put a paw on either shoulder as a cat hug, and start kissing the face.
There is a spot on his back that seems to be the lick button; when it's
scritched, he MUST start licking something, even if it's the sheet.
Ding, when he comes out to play, will do it, especially if he's in the
mood for a tummy scratch. His tongue is extremely soft for a cat --
more like a d*g's.

How cute! What a sweet little kitty, wanting to get everyone clean,
even though everyone is so much larger than she is.

Awwww! IBKFergus is a licker! Persia has just about licked the skin off my
hand at times. Sandpaper tongue!
When she gets really going, she also wants to show her affection by gently
nipping my hand, wrist or my elbow. Today I was on the couch reading and
she was purring up a storm on the back of the couch. I reached up to pat
her (she's so soft!) and she dipped her head to get neck and ear scritches.
Then she dipped her head under my hand and took my wrist in her teeth and
bit down. Unfortunately she bit a little too enthusiastically and I had to
say sternly, "Don't bite mama so hard!" She let go and looked at me,
abashed, and blinked her eyes in apology. Then she climbed down onto my
tummy and did upside-downy head, gazing at me with her big green eyes. I,
of course, melted. All is forgiven :)

The resident human licker here is Lily. It's her way of asking me to pet
her. Baby Eyes will lick other cats as often as she can and me, if I stick
my face in close when she's licking someone else. I've even seen her trying
to clean Gloria's dogs. Tommy doesn't lick but often he can't stop himself
from gently biting my hand. The others almost never lick me. Beatrice will
suckle if I allow it, while Eli goes wild with head rubbing on my but bathes
Beatrice half to death.
