I found out who'd been coming in and eating the catfood and the Cream of
Wheat.

Last night the door was partway open, Beatrice was in my lap, then suddenly
she was looking out the door into the darkness with a "WTF is that!?!?"
expression. I got up found a flashlight and shined it down the steps. All I
could see was Abelard sitting on the middle step, facing out.... but
Beatrice was still looking and still acting funny so I shined the light a
little farther out, and there, lo and behold, were three raccoons! One mama
and two small kits, and Abelard sitting there as if it was the most natural
thing in the world for these critters to be right there two feet in front of
him. Laying nonchalantly in the grass a few feet the other side of the 'coon
family was Billy, who also seemed not to have a care in the world.

As soon as I opened the screen door, the 'coons took off. Needless to say,
the cat flap was locked down last night and will stay that way at night for
some time to come.

I figured it was a coon--  but three!  You gotta love their nerve. ;)

My three reacted exactly the same to raccoons, didn't seem in the least bit
interested or upset by them. I think they figure that so long as the food
bowl gets refilled regularly its not really their problem :-)
