Poor old Otis

Otis is primarily an indoor cat, though he likes to sunbathe a bit when
he gets the chance, so I let him him go in the garden, which he doesn't
escape from.

Yesterday it was a scorcher and he was outside as I was leaving for
work, and I didn't have the heart to bring him in again, so I (rather
stupidly I know) left the back door open (I can't fit a cat flap so I
am a doorperson, i.e. lemme in, no lemme out etc.)  It's fairly safe
where I live so I wasn't too worried as I'm 3rd house in a terrace so
burglars would have to climb over 3 fences on the offchance that my
door was open, they couldn't see it.

Anyway, I digress.  I forgot that the door blows shut!  When I got home
last night at around 9pm he was outside the door making a right squeak
(can't miaow since throid gland removed), so I let him in, and he went
straight for the litter box where he spent ages peeing, bless him, he
won't go in the garden, always comes in to use his litter box, it was
so funny, the look of relief on his little face!

Awww, poor little guy! But so funny that he wouldn't go in the garden,
even when he really, really needed to.

He's not that bright (an eternal teenager the vet told me when he had
his first accident, trying to be polite), so I'm not sure that he even
realises that soil can be used in place of litter.  The only time he's
gone anywhere else was when we had bladder stones and (maybe he is
bright after all) - on my friend's brand new very expensive leather
handbag.  I don't have leather goods of my own, being a veggie, and
he'd never smelled it before - he he!

This reminds me of the time years ago when I put the hood of the litter box
facing the wrong way by mistake. The entrance to the box faced the wall.
Poor Rusty had to squeeze between the box and the wall to get inside
the box.

We had something similar with Fugazi and Isis. I had to go see my
parents and was going to stay the night and Dave was seeing some
friends who invited him out so we decided as I had a half day off the
next day, he would stay there and collect me from work as it would be
on the way back.

Anyway....some other friends turned up and that was good news since
they could give me a lift almost to my parents. So I made everything
ready for the fact the then Fabulous Furballs were being left alone
overnight. I made sure they had water a-plenty, cleaned the litter box
and put down a generous meal for them and then headed off.

As we were going out my friend's wife asked if she could use the toilet
so I said "Sure but can you not shut the bathroom door behind you when
you've finished as the girls won't be able to get to their box if you
do."

Of course I didn't check...

So the next afternoon Dave collected me from work and we went for a few
beers and something to eat and didn't get back til about 6pm...

Only to find the bathroom door was shut. So I opened it and...

Two tabby shaped blurs went past me and into the litter box! And yes I
have never seen such looks of relief on any living creature before or
since...They hadn't made a mess anywhere

Awww.  Poor little chap, but what a good boy!
I have to admit that I do the same as you, leave the back door open for the
kitties.  I live in a safe area and my neighbours are very vigilant.
I don't leave the door open so the cats can get to the litterbox as we don't
have one - they both prefer to use the outdoor one.  It's so they can get in
and have a snack or have a snooze on their beds.  In the winter so that they
can spend all day luxuriating in front of the gas fire in the kitchen which
I leave on for them :-/  Stupid or what?

I would like to install a cat flap but (a) it's a double glazed back
door and (b) he's 16 and not um (whispers) all that bright, so I dare
say he's too old to learn to use it.  My previous cat in my old place
used to tap on the outside of the window to get in, freaked some people
out!

One of our cats when I was growing up, Thompson, used to rattle the
letter flap when she wanted to be let inside.
