I'm back from the island with the cats. Luckily, my sister and BIL gave
me a lift back, so I didn't have to take the long bus ride with the
cats. Frank regaled us with his singing all the way. Miranda's brother
Emil and her unka Kasper were in the car, too, and Emil did some singing
of his own, though his voice is much smaller than Frank's deep, throaty
yowls, so not nearly as annoying. ;o)

Well, when I got the cats inside and let them come out of their
carriers, they both ran around and checked out the new place. Neither
seemed scared or worried that we weren't at the old place. They checked
everything out, Frank sat a long time and looked longingly at the garden
through the glass door, and then both he and Miranda settled for a nap
in the sauna.

On the whole, they've been getting on pretty well on the island, and
most evenings they would have a mutual grooming session. It is looking
like the same will continue here. Miranda will surely miss her brother,
since she and Emil became great friends and would play and chase each
other and wrestle and hunt together on the island. She'll be happy to
get a new playmate, I'm quite sure.

I haven't uploaded any of my pictures yet (and didn't take that many
this time), but my niece has posted a lot of fabulous pictures from the
island. She made a separate album with pictures of Mir-Mir. They're at
http://flickr.com/photos/45867313@N00/tags/miranda/ The other blue
kitten is Emil.

And there are more of her pictures from the island at
http://flickr.com/photos/45867313@N00/tags/island/ The big chunky
Russian Blue is Kasper, my niece's oldest cat.

I think that was the early days, when she and Emil hadn't become friends
yet. She's checking him out.

That's my pretty little girl. Not so little any more. When I got to the
island after being away for two weeks, I asked, who is that cat and what
have you done to Miranda? She'd grown so much in that time, and she'd
put a lot of meat on those skinny bones. Her appetite was great, and she
was always asking for food.

Was she still on her raw meat diet during her stay at the island?  She
looks very much like Kira now in those pictures, except with greener
eyes.

Yes, that's still all she will eat. Very hard to keep up a diet like
that on an island with no shops around. The nearest store is a 15-minute
boat ride away, and sometimes the weather just won't permit setting out
by boat. But we managed to keep her alive. ;o) She'd actually caught a
vole on the day I arrived back, and she'd tried to eat it, but aparently
it was a little too big for her. It would be ideal if she would catch
her own food. But I'm so proud that she caught a vole, and a big one at
that!

Welcome back.  Miranda is more elegant looking all the time.  I'm sure that
the new addition will be a welcome one for both Frank and Miranda.  He could
use the rest and she can use another playmate.

My niece takes such good pictures. I tried to catch them playing and
wrestling, but I don't think my pics will be nearly as good. Of course,
she has a much better camera, too.

Welcome back. Lovely pics.

Can't wait until you've introduced Leo/Karu: the only possible
danger I foresee (which is what's happened with Claudius,
Bandit & Snowball) is that the youngster takes to the senior
cat first!  That gives the old boy a hard time for a while until
the now middle cat is fully attuned to the newbie.

BTW, I know you don't really need more name suggestions,
but how about "Haldir"?  He's from LOTR and was a leader
of the Lothlorien elves. Great fellow, Peter Jackson in his
film of the Two Towers had him bring a detachment of archers
to help out at Helm's Deep, where he died a hero's death.

Just my 0.02's worth, in whatever currency you choose.

Awww!  Didn't you say you're having some sort of enclosure built so they can
enjoy the garden?  Or am I getting mixed up?

I am having an enclosure built, but haven't done it yet, so they'll have
to wait. I took them out on harness and leash yesterday to check out the
new garden. Miranda isn't used to the harness yet, so she was more
annoyed with that than interested in the garden, but Frank pottered
about happily for a while, ate some grass and brought it back up,
checked out the neighbour's garden through the cracks in the wall, etc.
Then he made as if to jump up on the low wall that surrounds the garden,
but I thought I have to draw the line there, so he doesn't think it's
alright to jump over to the other side. There are several busy streets
very near and I don't want him squished! The garden gives on a quiet
cul-de-sac and there's a polytechnic opposite it, so it's very quiet on
evenings and weekends. I don't even notice the noise from the streets
nearby. Very happy with this garden! Planning on planting some of those
pretty spring flowers, like crocuses and scilla.

> And when does Leo arrive?

I'd like to pick him up as soon as possible, but I haven't had a reply
to my e-mail yet that I sent on Saturday. They might have been away for
the weekend, of course. I hope I hear from the fosterer soon. I'm ready
to pick him up any time. I'm still off work this week.

Marina,

I am watching the world track and field championship in  Helsinki.
The TV reporter said there are lots of lakes there. Will be seeing a lot
more of Helsinki on TV as I watch the championship.

I was wondering if anyone was watching out there in rpca-land. There are
lots of lakes in Finland, but not actually in Helsinki. The city is on
the coast, though, and partially on islands. Watch the marathon, and
you'll see more of my hometown (I have no idea when that is. Not that
interested in sports events myself).

Here's a link to the website of the championships
http://www.helsinki2005.fi/
Choose desired language from the left hand side of the page. To check
schedules, see under schedules (wow!;))
The men's marathon will be on Sat 13 Aug starting at 14.20 (2.20 pm)
local time, and the women's marathon on Sun 14 Aug same time.

The Finnish time zone is GMT+2, so we're two hours ahead of the Brits,
some 6-10 hours ahead of the North Americans and I seem to remember from
Flippy's chatparty that we were some 7 hours behind Melbourne.

All of the pictures are just so beautiful.  Mir is a piece of moving art -
she's just stunning.  I missed seeing Frank though :-(

When I saw Mir's tale, I was reminded of Otis'.  His is grey with those
slight dark rings and his grey patches are very unusual - quite shimmery.
She also has a more oriental profile that I expected with a Russian Blue in
that she has the large ears and long lines.  Does she also have a loud
voice?  I am wondering if Otis has a bit of Russian Blue in him as well.

I'm glad you all had such a great trip and that its working out ok in your
new place.  I can't wait to hear about Leo's grand arrival - sounds like
Mir's had some good practice with her brother :-)

Since she hand-raised and bottle-fed her (Kira didn't have enough milk
for the babies), my niece has a special soft spot for Miranda. :o)
Besides, Frank mostly slept inside this summer. I'm afraid he's slowing
down a bit. :o( Last summer he would still play on the cliffs.

Her voice isn't very big, though louder than the two male RBs on the
island, Kasper and Emil. They both have pathetic little voices. I don't
think a big voice is part of the RB makeup. It's pretty funny with
kasper, since he has those glowering eyes and that puma-like face, and
then he opens his mouth and a little peep comes out.

Marina!  The pics of the kitties on the island are great; I enjoyed
them very much.  You are aware, though, that we are waiting for pics of
Frank and Miranda in the new apartment and Frank and Miranda in the new
garden and lots and lots and lots of pics of their new little brother
once he arrives.  You know that, right?   :-p

LOL, yes, I am aware. But it's such a mess here at the moment, I can't
take pictures. I got rid of a bookcase when I moved, and now i don't
have a place for everything that was on it, so all surfaces are
overflowing with books, papers, boxes and other stuff. I know, I know,
never mind the mess, the cats are the main thing. We'll see. BTW, my

how did he avoid the water at the bottom? Cats are incredible creatures.
