jmcquown - 04 Aug 2005 04:03 GMT Anyone here an MS Word guru? I am using a template d/l'd from the MS web site for the flier. It's looking very good but I want to put a border down the left side with images of produce (clip art! heheh). The template has this box down the left set up as a text box so when I try to paste graphics they run over into the main text. Word Help is not much help. Any ideas?
BTW he's now decided he wants 5000 of these; he's going to do a mailing (of which I will play no part!). So I'll contact my acquaintance who runs a print shop to ask about the price of printing and mark it up accordingly (but reasonably).
Also, I don't want to wind up on Judge Judy (!) so should I get a written contract or just the money up front or both? Thanks, everyone, for your input!

Wish I could help, but I suck at MS Word. I always used Pagemaker/Photoshop/Illustrator on the Mac.

Jill, is he going to fold an 8.5x11 flyer in half and send bulk mail? If so, you'll have to put a special box, with their bulk mail # according to post office specifications in the upper right corner. They'll give you literature at the post office that tells you exactly how it has to look. If it's first class, you don't have to worry about it.

Or money upfront, if you want. Wouldn't hurt, especially if you have to pay the printer upfront. Good luck! (Is there some way you can show off your flyer to us when you're done?)

I seriously doubt he knows anything about bulk-mail. He mentioned mailing but for all I know he's going to have his cousins running around sticking these on windshields or in mailboxes. This may be his idea of "mailing" :) I'm not getting involved in that aspect of this project!

I'm sure I can post a copy on webshots when I'm done. If I could only get the danged produce images down the left border... grrrr! This is looking like a really nice piece of work :)

And I have a program called "Print Shop Deluxe", which I find much easier to use than Word. (Of course, I've been using various versions of it ever since I got my first computer, and although it's become much more sophisticated, it's still basically the same when it comes to using it.)

It wouldn't have to be in "legalese", just spell out what you will do for him, and how much you will charge him for it.

Yes, maybe more like an estimate than a formal contract. All you need is the agreed price, the agreed form of payment, date of delivery and such. I've got Paint Shop on this PC, too. I've never played with it much. I just really prefer the Imac for graphic stuff. Pagemaker is pretty much obsolete now, but hey so am I. :-)

Shirley B. - 04 Aug 2005 06:03 GMT Jill, hi. I just had to make a flyer for the owner of a wine bar near here. She was talking about a grape border, but we ended up settling on a frame. But I had played around with it. You say the template already has a text box down the side. You should be able to insert your images in there. (This sounds simplistic) but make sure your cursor is IN the text box. If it doesn't work, maybe what the template has isn't a text box, but somethng else. Are you able to delete that and insert your own text box? If you do, I'd do the page setup margins as .5, .5, .5 and .5 so you don't lose too much space on the side. Good luck.

The images run over (but don't obscure) the main text which includes a list of what food they offer on the buffet every day.

I need it to accept graphic images but I can't figure out how to change it. When I paste the images with my cursor IN the box it runs the images over into the text in the next frame. Grrrrrr.
Are you able to

Shirley B. - 04 Aug 2005 06:40 GMT Jill, I just did a mock-up of a page w/a textbox down the left side. I grabbed some pix of grapes and stuck them in there. I 'print screened' it and copied to Paint Shop.Made the pic into a jpg. I uploaded it to alt.binaries.pictures.animals (ok, so it's not an animal, but it's handy). Title is "textbox".
When you insert the images into the t'box, remember you have to downsize them.

> When you insert the images into the t'box, remember you have to downsize > them. also, I don't have Word on this computer, so I can't check how to do it, but you should be able to change the wrap settings on the image. I think you get a menu when you right-click on the image, but as I said, I can't check now, and I don't use clipart enough to be absolutely sure. But it seems to me that there are settings in that menu that helped me position images. You can also probably use your own clip art as a page border, and set it for left side only, but I haven't tried that myself.
I used to love WordPerfect, although I haven't used it in enough years that I suspect I'm out of date on it now. My present employer insists on Word, and I find figuring out how to do and fix things that aren't quite right in Word far more difficult and counter-intuitive than it was in Word.

I used DOS WP 5.1 in high school journalism, and I still miss it. Reveal codes for teh <sic> win, as my gaming friends would say. WordPerfect was far more than a word processor; it was a publishing system.
I use OpenOffice at home because it's both free and open source. It's about as full-featured as I can imagine needing for anything I do at home, and it has a built-in "export as PDF" feature that's mighty handy. I liked sending out resumes in PDF because I knew the recipient would see the document just as I'd seen it.

I think you're right that you need one or the other -- contract or money -- to protect yourself.
