Rufous is having trouble jumping this morning. He wasn't able to make it
on the bed and just now he couldn't get into the litterbox (it's a
purrfect privvy, so it's a small jump to get in and out). Not normal for
a 2 year old who just got a clean bill of health last week. He's not
limping or anything, and I've gone over his legs and spine and nothing
seems tender. Should I worry about this? Or perhaps he just fell hard
and is now a bit skittish jumping? Should I take him to TED?

I just realized he got a rabies shot on his left right leg on Saturday.
Could this be related? He might not have been jumping well since then
and we just didn't notice until today.

Ok, sorry for the multiple posts. Upon closer examination, he is limping
a little bit, but from the opposite leg to the rabies shot. I'd hate to
have an x-ray done if it's just a sprain or something like that. Is
there a way to tell? I'd rather not zap him unnecessarily.

If it's just a sprain he will be better each day. Otherwise he will get
worse.

I do hope it's nothing serious, but maybe you can phone the vet and ask?
Lots of best wishes and purrs,

Purrs that he soon feels better. If he's still the same in a few hours I
would take him to TED.

Victor, is everything else the same - eating, eliminating? You said he got
his shot but that he was limping on his *other* let - it might be possible
that, by favoring his "shot" leg, he landed too hard on his other leg.
I'd say just watch him very closely to see if it gets better, but if it
doesn't within a day, or if it getw worse, take him to TED immediately.

I'm with Catnipped on this. I would give him 24 hours or even a little
longer. If he improves within this time (not necessarily better, but a
definite improvement since you noticed it) I would not take him to TED as
its likely he is on the mend and has just twisted something jumping.
If he gets worse I would take him. If he doesn't improve in 48 hours I
would take him.
Now this is just my own opinion after having dogs, horses, goats, sheep,
hens, geese and now cats for many years. OK? This is what I think after
years of experience:
Just like yourself, animals can have slight accidents. Apply it to
yourself - if you had these symptoms would you go to your doctor or maybe
see how it was in a day or two?
I have rushed my animals to the vet on many occasions. A sudden collapse in
Pearl, my whippet (was a burst spleen), for example.
I would wait to see if a limp improves, myself. It may well be related to
having the injection in his other leg and favouring the other one because of
the discomfort.

I agree on this too, it's possible that he just hurt something and will
be a litle stiff for a few days. The shot might have had somehting to
do with it, but who knows for sure.
I'd keep an eye on him and if he gets worse or no better in a few days
definitely take him to TED.

Boy, I'd sure want to take him in. That is wierd.
Purrs for nothing serious.

I'd try to examine him myself and see if anything seems extra sore. He may
have slipped. Cats only land on their feet if they have enough room to get
turned over. Or he may have got the sort end of a wrestling match.
Molly took a hard fall two nights ago. I was trying to give her a glass of
water and she was backing up and lost her balance and fell off the counter.
On to a wooden bar stool on the way down.

I'm in the "Watch him and see if he gets better/worse before taking him
to TED" camp. It could have been a wrestling match, or an awkward
landing. Since you've already given him a finger examination and
didn't find any obvious problems, I tend to think the leg is just
sore. But do take him to the vet if he's no better tomorrow. I hope
nothing serious is wrong.

TuTu has a spell like that a couple of weeks ago. I keep her Petsmate
drinking fountain on the bathroom counter. For two days she couldn't
make the jump. After a couple of tries, I lifted her up (she does not
like to be picked up). I then left water on the floor in all rooms. She
now makes the jump just fine. MLB

Purrs that it's nothing too serious and that he's on the mend soon.

Tom says that when he got home, Rufous was on top of the armoir, so he's
getting around. He still limps a bit, but it's definitely not worse than
it was this morning. We'll keep an eye on him and decide in the am if he
needs to be x-rayed or not.
Thanks for all the purrs!

Good! It sounds as if he may have just strained a muscle (poor baby, I know
how he feels). Purrs still coming that he'll continue to improve quickly.
