Did you bird-loving cat folks see this AP
news I found in my hometown paper this am? Why would anyone argue the
existence of a cute little (noisy - but 'peckers *are* cute) bird in a
swamp?!

Thanks, Hop-- I've been following the ivory-bill debate, with a litte
disbelief-- the argument has been whether the bird spotted was indeed
the ivory bill or the more common pileated, which resembles  the ivory
bill.    But seems to me that seasoned birders and ornithologists--
who see the pileated all the time-- would *know* when the bird they
saw is *not* a pileated.  Pileateds are pretty big birds, but an ivory
bill would look like a pterodactyl. ;)  They ain't little!

OTOH, my neighborhood (downy) 'peckers *are* incredibly cute li'i
guys. ;)

Ah yes!  I came home from somewhere (?) the other day and there was a tiny
male downy scooting up and down the tree next to my patio.  I feel awful
that I haven't put out any suet this year.  It attracts both the downy's and
the red-bellied (which look like larger downy's).  I really need to start
feeding those critters again; they are so much fun to watch!

I amend my former stance of liking only owls....all my former life in s.FL,
there were those you call "red-bellies" knocking on trees, and I always
liked them. I preferred by far their knocking than the obnoxious squawking
and dive-bombing of our cats the mockingbirds and especially bluejays were
fond of doing......I never felt bad when Toopy flipped on her back and *got*
one! At least she'd eat them except the feet. Her fur insulated many a nest
around our house.....LOL.

A few years ago I heard this sound from out back; I thought someone was
banging on my Weber kettle grill on the patio!  I looked out... no one
there.  Then I realized the sound was reverberating down through my
fireplace.  It's a metal fireplace with a metal chimney.

I went outside... there was a red-bellied woodpecker on the roof, banging
away at my chimney!  I had to laugh.  It wasn't trying to dig holes to get
at bugs in a tree.  The hammering you hear is also them announcing their
territory to other woodpeckers, warning them to stay away.  Mine had found a
spectacular "warning bell" to ring!  LOL

Oh, absolutely yes!! If they can find something louder than the tree
trunks, they will go for it.  Trash cans are also big favorites. ;)
