My cats are too easy. I've been thinking about all the
anecdotes I read here and why I have so few to contribute, and
that's the conclusion I've come to.
Sure, Will has asthma and Heidi has long hair and a healthy
tendency to shed. But those are rather faded and pedestrian
methods of making trouble for humans, don't you think? And even
in those behaviors, they miss obvious opportunities. In the two
years that I've had them, long-haired Heidi has never coughed up
a hair-ball! And Will, who needs frequent medication, rather
than making me pay dearly for the privilege of dosing him, takes
pills and inhaled meds with only token resistance and less
grumbling than most humans.
Neither of them is excessively clingy, but both love petting and
are easy to handle. Heidi only attacks my papers on the
desk-top when she is really desperate to get me out of bed in
the morning; and Will ceased splintering the door jambs as soon
as I indicated my disapproval and gave him the Alpine Scratcher
instead. There's a little wear and tear on the furniture, but
never any deliberate destruction.
My previous two owners were no great shakes in the aggravation
department, lord knows, but at least they knew enough to barf
frequently and always on a bed or carpet. These two, in the
rare instance that they do barf something up, have almost always
done it on a hardwood or concrete floor. They just don't seem
to get it. They have neither the destructive creativity
(oxymoron) nor the evil-mindedness displayed by most cats. It's
as though their arsenal of Bastard Cat Tricks and Aggravating
Behaviors was never properly furnished.
Could they be members of a lost tribe of cats? Are there some
cats among us who have, through the generations, lost contact
with the Mother Ship and have only a vestigial memory of their
true mission? Have my cats perhaps never had the advantage of
training with the cadre? Have they never had a course in how to
make full and proper use of a human slave?
It's a sad thought.

They're just lulling you into a false sense of security. Cats have the
patience to wait *years* to drop (or barf in) the other shoe. Be afraid, be
*very* afraid! ;>

What I'm really afraid of is that I'll wake up some morning to
hear, "All right, you miserable boots, fall in! My name is
Master Sergeant Nocturne and I'm the Drill Instructor from Hell!
You're gonna hate me for six weeks, but when I'm through with
you, you *will* be proper felines...."

Hehehe... that's pretty much the way Basho and Issa are. :)

Oh, my Stinky is incredibly trouble-free- making up for a very wild
hoolikittenhood. But even as a little hellion, his disposition has so
sweet and jolly it was impossible to get mad at him.

I figure as long as mine know where the Litterbox is, everything else is
minor.
Cali is a bright, FAT don't pick me up girl with a penchant for gobbling her
dry food and barfing it up. She has one broken vase to her credit. She's
also racked up a few vet bills for constipation, as she doesn't care for wet
food. Cali loves the outdoors (indoor cat though), hunting and Catnip. She
has a maniacal sense of humour, especially when it comes to inventing new
ways to wake me up in the morning.
Smokey is a JEALOUS, intellectually challenged girl who loves to be picked
up. She eats like a horse, loves her wet food, but has a penchant for
barfing it up on the rug. She has no household damage to her credit yet and
has had no medical issues. Smokey is afraid of the Big Out, didn't have a
clue about mice until Cali taught her and is indifferent about Catnip.
Smokey has no interest in waking me up in the morning, she thinks a bed is a
terrible thing to waste.

I loved your amusing post. Both my cats arrived as adult strays (altho BF
was just a big kitten) and haven't really been much trouble at all.
Kitty FC is fierce and grumpy, and weighing only 4 lbs doesn't stop her in
her pursuit of being the most bad-tempered cat in the world. Boyfriend is
quite shy, retiring and a very nice chap.
Neither is a problem to me. I can do grumpy and shy ;-) They are both
adorable in their own way and I love them both to bits.

Maybe they're fresh off the mother ship and haven't learned yet.
