jmcquown - 30 Jul 2005 11:28 GMT We've had the "where are you?" posts - country, province, city, state, etc. How about where have you lived? And to keep it semi-on-topic, did you have a cat or cats and if so, did you move the cat(s) with you or have to make other arrangements?
I'll start - USA: California (twice) Virginia (twice) New Jersey Ohio South Carolina Tennessee
Lived 2 years in Thailand
My brother had a kitten, Princess (RB) when we were transferred from Virginia to Bangkok; we couldn't take her with us. She went to live with my aunt in Maryland. Princess was a cool little orange tabby cat (I likened her colour to peanut butter rather than orange). I didn't know the term at the time but in the evenings she always got a major case of the zoomies. Our family room where we watched television was in the basement which had a tiled floor. She'd fly from one end of the basement to the other, slide on the floor, bounce off the wall and dash into the laundry room. And repeat
:) We laughed at her antics. She was also leash-trained which tickled the neighbors no end... they'd never seen a cat walk on a leash before.
I've only personally had one cat, Persia, here in Tennessee, but I can tell you my sweet darlin' Persia will go wherever I may go :) No doubt about it.

Cool thread, Jill.
For my first four years, I was in a few bits of South East England.
Left in England in 1975, and came to NSW, Australia with my parents and stayed on a migrant hostel in Wollongong, NSW.
My parents loved the area, as do I, and I have been in various locations around Wollongong ever since.
Shmogg has moved with me through various rental propertis 5 times, poor thing, before we settled here. Fluff & IBKFergus have never moved with me, this being their first "foreverhome",

I was born in Ft Monroe, VA, lived in Phoebus/Newport News area the first eight years. Then to: Pittsburgh, PA Rantoul, IL Bossier City/Shreveport, LA Houma, LA Sebring, FL Lakeland, FL Washington, DC Alexandria/Annandale, VA Lakeland, FL Huntsville, AL Cocoa Beach/Cape Canaveral, FL Huntsville, AL
The family never had cats until I was in my teens. Then, and especially after my marriage, there have been a minimum of two, a maximum of seven. When moving, the cats *always* came along with us.
I had seven children, all now grown, and all seven have cats!! At last count, 3-4 years ago, there had been a total of 78 cats among us over the years.

Just lived two places, New Orleans and here in Houston. Actually, "New Orleans" was *way* outside the city down in St. Bernard parish next to a levee and in front of a horse stables. there was only one road into our area and we lived in a "circle" subdivision with the stables on one side and woods all around. This was the "perfect" dumping place for everyone's unwanted cats / kittens. At the time I left I must have been feeding and vetting 20 or 25 cats who "lived" in the stables and caught rats for their keep (we had only Bandit inside). My daughter and SIL took over the house when we moved with only 10 years left to pay on it (and a $150 house note on a 3 bedroom, brick house on a 75 X 100 foot lot!!!), and the only condition I made was that they had to take care of all the strays that showed up (the ones already there were already speutered so they just needed to be fed and have regular vaccs). We took Bandit with us to Houston.

Canada - almost entirely Newfoundland, but also Ontario and Quebec for periods of a year or two. And I spent three years in Nigeria.
No cats for most of this time. I very briefly had cats in Nigeria; one disappeared, probably because of a predator, & the babycats were too young to survive without their mother. I also briefly had two during the many years of bouncing from place to place in Canada because of family, work and education, but had to find them a new home when the next move came up. I finally got things arranged so that I felt that I had enough stability in my life to adopt a cat permanantly, so I started looking for one and eventually brought Mandy home. A few months later, I decided to provide her with some company during the day, and brought Betsy home.

And to keep it semi-on-topic, did you have >a cat or cats and if so, did you move the cat(s) with you or have to make >other arrangements? Born in LA, moved to Texas, moved to various places in Wyoming, moved to various places in Arizona, no pets I can remember for my first six years. In 54 moved to Texas to live with granny, many cats over the next ten years. The next few years I lived in a couple other places in Texas, then went to Denver. No pets. Met my husband. When my son was born, DH decided son needed a dog. I wanted a cat. So we got both, Toby and Tramp. A few years later we moved to Tulsa and took dog and cat on plane, moved to SW OKlahoma and took pets. Back to Denver with same pets. Old pets died, acquired new cat and dog. Raised baby Blackbird and later a baby squirrel. And another cat when that one got killed. And agin. Heartbreaking. Moved to Brighton in the country in 83. Had Sargeant and several cats. Acquired geese, ducks, chickens, goat, and calf. Moved to this area in 88. Down to two cats, 1 dog, 3 chickens, geese, ducks, goat, and calf. Coyotes got ducks and one cat. Two chickens died of old age. Calf was butchered. Sad story. In 90 moved to this house and got more goats and chickens. Eventually all pets and livestock died of illness or old age; but had new dog and cats. Today new dog is almost 14 and cats are 14, 12 1/2, 2 1/2. Tarbaby, Max, DC, and Amber are buried out back in the cottonwood grove they loved. This home has lots of memories.

Gabey8 - 30 Jul 2005 20:24 GMT I've always lived in Pennsylvania in the USA. In that time span, I've had 5 cats, though never more than 2 at any given time.
My first cat, Misty, was leash trained. The first few times I had her outside, I got asked, "What kind of dog is THAT?"
By people who were dead serious.
I used to live on a narrow little street (and I do mean NARROW) comprised of row houses. (Real estate ads call them "Town houses" these days.) There's no way in the world that they couldn't have noticed Misty sitting in our front window on a daily basis, and I'm sure they realized THEN that she was a cat.
So why they suddenly thought that wearing a leash turned her from a feline into a canine, I have no idea. My answer was, "The kind of dog that purrs and says 'mew' ". :o)
Eventually, I stopped taking her for walks out on the street. Cars and noises scared her. But she LOOOOOOVED going on walks in our little backyard. No cars, no noise, a little garden to sniff in... she couldn't get enough of it. So I took her for walks in the yard instead.

And to keep it semi-on-topic, did you > have > a cat or cats and if so, did you move the cat(s) with you or have to make > other arrangements? I was born in the suburbs of Washington DC in 1945 and lived there until 1968. Nearly all of it in the same house. We had a dog, Frisky for a few years. And a white kitten Snowball for a few weeks. Didn't know about distemper.
We moved to Anchorage Alaska in 1968 where we adopted Alesandra ilhelmina - Willie (a small black poodle) and Dammit Sam (an active lilac point Siamese). In 1969 we adopted our daughter Vicki. We all moved to Yuba City California in 1971. Our second daughter Tara arrived from Korea in 1976. Charlie and I are still in the same house. Willie lived until 1983, Sam a little longer. Somewhere along the line Ginger, a feral kitten moved in. Willie was followed by Brandie Alesandra, a small apricot poodle pup and Sam was followed by Henry, another lilac point Siamese. Maggie, another feral cat found us along the way. Brandie turned out to be an excellent mamma dog who had several litters of pups. In 1987 we kept the two from her last litter. Sugar and Taffee. Brandie died of a virus in 1990 that nearly cost us the two pups as well. They survived. Taffee died a few years ago and Sugar last year. When Charlie retired in 1998 we got Jacob our SealPoint Siamese and in 2004 Molly a tiny loving SealPoint girl. She was killed by a neighbors dogs last year. Our final addition was a feral calico young lady that we call Molly. Not that she has ever answered to it or anything else.

Enfilade - 30 Jul 2005 22:08 GMT DP and I acquired Nocturne in Kingston, Ontario in January 2002, knowing we would be moving when DP got into med school and fully intending to take her with us.
I got Smokey in August 2002 at CFB Trenton, an hour west of Kingston, and brought him home.
We found the bitties in August 2003, /three weeks/ before that fated move to medical school....halfway across the country.
Our whole family came East with us. Including the bits, who were about 6 weeks old at the time. We were so grateful the weather wasn't hot...24 hours in a car as a kitten is hard enough, but if it had been a horrible hot day?

I've lived in Chillicothe, Athens and Columbus, Ohio. Only other place I lived was St. Petersburg, Florida, for one year.
When I moved to Florida, I had one cat, Isis, and couldn't take her with me. So my mom got her. Once I was back in Ohio and could take her, it was too late, as mom had become attached. I swear that cat was mad at me for leaving her there, even though it was a great situation for her. But every time I visited, she would come up to me all happy, and then suddenly stop, get this look on her face like "Hey -- wait a minute!", then reach out and smack me hard with her paw! She'd stomp off, and later come back for some pets. Guess she just had to tell me what she thought of me leaving her there!

Lafayette, CA (first time) - no pets
Concord, CA (first time) - no cat, but had parakeet and adopted canary-winged beebee (a small parrot)
Lafayette, CA (second time) - no cat; but had fantail goldfish and the canary-winged beebee moved here with me
Walnut Creek, CA - no pets, but my sister's cat stayed with me for a weekend once (she was a very nice houseguest!)
Concord, CA (second time, still live there) - 6 cats, 2 or 3 at a time. Adopted Doc and Hickory as kittens, Hickory died 2 days later. One year later adopted Jennifer. Doc & Jennifer each lived to be almost 17. When Doc was gone and Jennifer seemed very lonely, adopted 5-month-old kittens Sundance and Cassidy (littermates). Cassidy was put to sleep due to FIP 2 weeks later, and vet advised not bringing in another cat for 6 months. 2 months later Jennifer passed away. Exactly one day after the 6-month limit, adopted 2-year-old Rebecca. Still have Sundance & Rebecca.

Shiral - 02 Aug 2005 08:02 GMT Sheesh... I've lived such a tame life! =o) Very few moves, really.
Okay: 1963-1971 Greer Road Palo Alto California. When I was three we got a Shetland Sheepdog puppy whom we named Pippin. WHen I was about seven, we adopted Luna, a black and white female DMS cat from a local pet store. We named her Luna as she was grey and white spotted, and her coat looked rather like a moonscape. I'm embarrassed to admit that Luna had several children before we finally took pity on her and had her spayed. SHe used to hang around at the end of our driveway scoping the neighborhood for boyfriends, I think. We kept one of the kittens from Luna's first litter, a mostly white long haired cat with pale calico markings, and named her Mira. Mira and Luna hated each other. 1971--my mother buys the house where she still lives. Pippin, Luna and Mira all make the move with us, although Mira screamed bloody murder all the way over to the new house. She was a deeply messed-up cat, although she was very beautiful. My sister was Mira's favorite hoomin. 1982-1986 Four undergraduate years at Linfield college. No pets allowed, but my roommate Leslie is a definite cat person. She tells me about her crew living and dead, which included Mousemeat RB and Miskitty RB. 1982--Pippin, then aged 16 crosses the rainbow bridge, being very old and in so much pain he no longer wanted to go for his walks. 1985 Mira is put to sleep due to kidney failure 1988 Luna is put to sleep for much the same reasons. 210 Calderon Ave, Mountain View 1988 Now in my own apartment, I adopt Panther and Isadora(RB) as 8 week old kittens from the local animal shelter. I was longing for a cat to such a degree, that One morning, I found myself stroking my bedspread, since I had such a clear idea there OUGHT to be a cat lying beside me in bed. Izzy was a very pretty black and white spotted little girl with big, astonished golden eyes and the only cat I've ever seen with frosted black ears. (Mostly black ears with an even dusting of white hairs all over the backs of her ears.) She was a shameless attention hog and cuddle bug, and ruled the roost her entire life. 1989 Present:I move to my current apartment with Izzy and Pan in tow, just six weeks before the Loma Prieta Earthquake on October 17, 1989. Cats and I sat on my bed, all of us terribly jumpy, especially whenever there was another aftershock. =o) After one particularly strong aftershock, Izzy, who had been exploring the living room, came tearing into my room and burrowed under the bed, and didn't move again for several hours. =o) March 26, 2004. Isadora crosses the Rainbow Bridge, due to kidney failure.
May 20, 2004 Francesca comes home from the Sillicon Valley Humane Society to live with Panther and me... and well, you know the rest of THAT story!

SuzQ - 03 Aug 2005 12:40 GMT Jill asked: We've had the "where are you?" posts - country, province, city, state, etc. How about where have you lived? And to keep it semi-on-topic, did you have a cat or cats and if so, did you move the cat(s) with you or have to make other arrangements?

Jane - 03 Aug 2005 16:06 GMT >We've had the "where are you?" posts - country, province, city, state, >etc. >How about where have you lived? And to keep it semi-on-topic, did you >have >a cat or cats and if so, did you move the cat(s) with you or have to make >other arrangements? New York State for most of my life (NOT the city!! Deep country) - lots of cats and a couple of dogs. Mostly cats. We had 14 cats at one time (had a litter that grew up) - I moved around a lot in the original area and had a cat of my own, who got a huge tumor and had to be put down on the same day that my car was totalled in a wreck (on the way back from the vet).
Washington D.C. metro area....lots of apartments in MD and VA, moved around a bit. It had taken me more than 10 years to get over the loss of my first cat, so no cats until I got Leia. She only lasted 9 months. I didn't want to go through that again, but Fin had other ideas. He picked me up in a parking lot and lived with me for 10 years.
I'm still in MD, with Princess Rita now.

Cathi - 04 Aug 2005 05:59 GMT >We've had the "where are you?" posts - country, province, city, state, etc. >How about where have you lived? And to keep it semi-on-topic, did you have >a cat or cats and if so, did you move the cat(s) with you or have to make >other arrangements? Well, apart from a three-month stint in Germany, I've never moved outside my home county.
Born in Maidstone, county town of Kent. Lived there until age 14. Family had a d-thing, William, when I was born; he died when I was about 7, and I acquired Tigger, my first cat, a couple of years later. She brought home Purdey, a stray, a couple of years after that.
At 14 my parents moved to Hythe on the South Kent coast. Cats came with us.
At around 28 I met Richard, and started heading off over there for weekends. I got home one Sunday, whereupon my mother greeted me with "You've not let that wretched cat in, have you?" Apparently a large ginger cat had been loitering around the house all weekend. As I'm sure you'll guess, he stayed, earning the original name of Ginger. We never found out where he came from. He was wearing a very old, worn collar, but was in pretty good condition, and neutered. We do wonder if he came from the estate behind us, which had a high percentage of elderly residents. Maybe his owner passed away, and he decided to find a new home.
At 29 I moved to Ramsgate, where Richard was living. By this time, Tigger had gone to the Bridge at 18, and Purdey only had a couple of years left on this earth. Not bad for a cat that was hit by a car and lost half his tail, and then lost half the fur on his back for some reason (we think a less than charming neighbour might have thrown something over him, but couldn't prove anything). Sadly, having had two fairly long-lived cats (18 and 20) Mum only managed to keep Ginger for three or so years - he disappeared one night. Over the years she's lived in Hythe, her road has got progressively busier, and I suspect he was one of its victims.
Richard and I didn't have any cats whilst we lived in Ramsgate, as we were right in the town centre near two major roads. However, when we moved to Seasalter we acquired Izzie (RB), Jasper and his mum Jemima (BR), and then Carrie. Fenchurch, on the other hand, acquired us.
Mention of RB kitties on another thread has led me to post this:

It needs a lot of work doing (broken links), but there are a number of pix of the various furry masters that we've had over the years, both separately and together.
