[quoted text clipped - 14 lines] >>If you need any help getting into the room, please see this page: >>http://www.flippyscatpage.com/catchat.html Elisabet, If you use a PC to access the internet, but don't have a separate program for IRC-chatting (such as mIRC, Pirch, MS Chat, Visual IRC, IceChat etc.), you should use the link under "Java IRC for PC users". The link goes straight to a browser based version of the chatroom.
Choose a nickname and enter it into the box "Nick", no passwords or room keys required, just hit Connect to StarChat and you'll se a list of text flitter by - your computer connects to the StarChat server - let the text do its thing, and once it stops you can go ahead and chat - provided there are others to chat with... :)
To chat you just type your text into the box below the (fairly small) chat window and hit Enter - and your text turns up in the chat window for all chatters to see.
I tested chatting with myself (as there only seemed to be a couple of bots on the channel) with one me in the Java chat and another on IceChat in IRC and it works just fine, both can see what the other says. So now I've really done it - talking to myself in public and over the net!! :D
Hope this helps.

Christine K. - 28 Jul 2005 18:52 GMT > Choose a nickname and enter it into the box "Nick", no passwords or room Oh, almost forgot, if you try to use a nick that's already in use, you'll probably get an error message to that effect. Maybe we should all use similar nicks to what we use here - at least it would make it easier to identify each other.

Check the Java settings of your browser. In Mozilla Firefox it is under Tools - Options - Web Features (at least in version 1.0.6), In Netscape 7.2 under Edit - Preferences - Advanced - Scripts & Plugins, in Netscape 8.0 under Tools - Options - Site Controls and within the frame Web Features. In Internet Explorer (the latest one I have is 6.0 sp2, I don't use it) it's found under Tools - Internet Options/Settings (?, my IE's in Finnish), Additional settings (or something like that). Used to have Opera too at some time, but it didn't do what I wanted so I deleted it. Like I've said before, I like to try out different programs. :)

Karen - 30 Jul 2005 19:20 GMT The uni I work for online got new chat and IE 6 users sometimes had trouble with chat. THey needed to install a slightly older version of java to work. So that is a tip for some of you that may help. If you install java and it doesn't work, you might need a slightly older version.

Please check the > following links to find out what day/time it will be in YOUR time zone: I tested the link. I could see the chat, but could not respond. Someone there said, AOL users must register separately, so I did. I still couldn't "talk", so I assume it takes a bit for the registration to process. Hope it doesn't take long. I'm very much looking forward to the chat. Hans was in the room, and said "Hi" and I couldn't respond. I felt like I was being very rude....sorry, Hans!

Apparently they have a vendetta against AOL and single out AOL users to make it more difficult to participate. I finally got the verification #'s, password, etc. via e-mail, but I can't figure out *where* I'm supposed to use them, and I'm already too frustrated to try any further. You all have fun. I might lurk, but I can't participate.

Okay, I just read the AOL help section again. It says my solution is to change ISP's. That's a lot of help.

Hi Sherry, Do you have Internet Explorer or Netscape installed separately on your computer? If so, you may be able to sign in to AOL, minimize it, then run IE/NS separately and access the chat. I used to do it that way.
Good luck! Patti

I'm on a "plan" with the phone co. that I get unlimited access to *one* phone number for $30 extra on my phone bill. If I sign on with any other number, it's a per-minute charge for every minute I'm online. We can't get broadband and there is no local ISP #.

I'm on As I read it, the suggestion is, if you have more than one browser, to access AOL with Netscape then minimize that window and open another browser to go to the chatroom - same dialup session. I think I'm a lost cause :-) > Sherry Not at all. There are several browsers (what you use to surf), IE comes with Windoze so it's by far most prevalent. Netscape used to be the main browser, now small market share but owned by AOL. Both these browsers have problems (IE is slow, insecure and old, Netscape is also outdated). Mozilla is IMO the best browser but ... back o the chatroom. What we were trying to say was, if you used Netscape with AOL then open IE to access the chatroom. But I dunno what to suggest if all you were using was IE, except get another browser, could be tedious with dialup but worth it. Norm (I'm on rural dialup and downloaded Mozilla http://www.mozilla/org )
PS: The liabilities with IE are that, without latest security patches, it can download bad attachments; it also enables pop-ups (which can be ads or nastier things); and it is often targetted byhackers because it's Microsoft.
