Just got home earlier today after going to Bangkok and Chiang Mai with
Dennis and some friends from back home.  We had a great trip, great to
see friends again and of course great to see Dennis after his usual
month long work absence.
Our friends enjoyed their time here and definitely did their fair
share of shopping.  They lucked out with the weather too, it was nice
the whole time except for the last couple of days in Chiang Mai it was
rainy.  But they were white water rafting during the worst rain
anyway, so it didn't matter.
We took a Thai cooking class together and that was fun, we all ate so
much we had to roll back to the hotel.  Dennis and I bought a couple
of shelves which are being shipped to us in a week or so.  We have a
ton of pictures but strangely they all seem to be of the 4 of us at
some sort of restaurant with drinks!  Can't figure out how that
happened ;-)
Anyway, here's the good news.  We received an email from Australia
immigration asking us for the deposit of a large sum of money to hold
in trust for a year in order to finalize our application.  So all we
have to do now is transfer the money into the holding account and we
will be getting our visa :-)  Yay, double YAY!!!  We're so excited,
now we can finally stop living in limbo and get on with our plans for
the future.  We figure we will probably be leaving Thailand around
April.  I'll be sad to leave when the time to leave comes but it's
time for a change.  Need to set down some roots and Margaret River,
Australia is the place, woo hoo :-)
Anyway, enough gushing.  Vino was happy to see us after our week away
but he's developed a terrible lying habit.  He's trying to tell us
that he never got any gooshy food while we were away.  But I know he
got plenty because the big container that I'd left in the fridge is
nearly empty.
I still have over 2000 posts to catch up on, so I'll just send out
blanket purrs to everyone who needs them for now.

That's wonderful news about the visa. I shall look forward to next
April's posts about Vino & Co. settling in Margaret River. :-)

Welcome back, Britta!  I'm glad you guys had fun.

Great news about the Visa, you must be very excited.  But what's with the
great deal of money to be "held"?  They get to use your money (earning
interest on it) just so you'll have the privilege of moving???!  That seems
a bit shady (and to think Australia used to be a penal colony that people
tried *not* to get sent to!  ;>

Many countries do this.  My parents had to have a huge pile of cash in
order to get into Canada from West Germany too.  For our visa it
wouldn't have been necessary if Dennis was under 35, but since he's
soooo old now (37), we need the money in order to make up enough
points to qualify for the visa.  The money sits in the account for a
year and collects interest and you get to keep the interest at the end
when you get your money back.  Unfortunately, I doubt it goes into any
sort of high interest earning sort of investment, but what can you do?
We're just happy we've saved the money and don't have any problem
making the deposit.

That was my first thought - kind of like the Nigerian scam emails.  "Hi, you
send your money and we will send you..."  Seems odd that Australian
immigration would communicate this via email rather than written documents.

Of course they are not communicating via email!  Sheesh, we're not
stupid!  The whole thing is being handled through our migration agent
who communicates with us via email first of all, to get news to us as
soon as possible and then we also receive hard copies of all the
documents from DIMIA.  We have been dealing with this visa for over a
year now and this money bond deposit is absolutely no surprise and
it's all done very officially through government agencies.  We will
receive the money back and the interest it generates in a year (not
that we expect that to be much, but we haven't been getting much
interest on it for the past year either as the money has been sitting
in a savings account in order to be readily accessible for this
purpose).  This is common and my parents had to do the same thing when
emigrating to Canada from Germany in 1982.

Britta, I never intended to say you were stupid!  It just sounded rather
suspect, you can understand that, right?  Obviously you would have
immigration papers... my own maternal grandparents had papers from Scotland
to Canada (although I don't know if they had to put money in trust first,
never heard about that; this was back around 1918 or so).

I guess it just didn't sound suspect to us because we've been aware of
this all along and we've been waiting for this request for money for
months now.  Maybe it just came accross that way in my message.  But
we knew for years that if we wait until Dennis is over 35, we would
have to have the money and how it was all going to happen.  Nothing
shady about it and we're not worried about it.  Obviously it would be
nice if we didn't have to do this because we could use the money to
buy our lot and build our house, but we will just wait until we get it
back and rent a house in the meantime.

I wonder if this is the practice that made the Nigeria scams sounds
so plausible to some people?  I have never heard of it, but then,
I've never left my country either.  Britta, you gotta admit, to those
of us who go nowhere and do nothing, it really sounded suspect.  I
just thought it was amusing, how similar it sounded to the scam.

I didn't have to do that when I immigrate to Canada from U.S
in the '70s. But if I recalled correctly, they did check  my savings.
Also I was sponsored by my relatives in Canada so that might make a
difference.  Don't think my parents did that either when they came to Canada
in the early '80s. Again my brother sponsored them.

Yes, it's much different if you get sponsored by a relative.  My
parents didn't have any sponsor and neither do we.
Actually, we are proceeding with the process of transferring the money
and got the info yesterday about where to put it.  Turns out it's an
Australian govt. bond and will receive 5.1% interest in a year.  Not
so bad, we've been getting less than that so far.  We figure the
sooner we put the money in, the sooner we can get it back out.  We
want to buy a lot and build a house, so will be needing the money for
that.

Welcome back, Britta. Sounds like a fun trip, and many congratulations on
the emigration to Australia news!  =o)

Well...I guess it's Vino's job to make you feel guilty for going off without
him. Wonder how he'll like Australia?

Congrats on the good news.  Can you immigrate while the money is in the
holding account or do you have to wait a whole year?

When we got back after our trip, the kids LIED repeatedly to DW and I that
they hadn't been properly attended.  Yeah, right!  There wasn't any food
left
(we brought our own gooshy and dry since ours are finicky eaters).

I know what you mean.  I had 5,4?? to catch up after only 2 weeks.

Congratulations! I went to have a look at the immigration department website
out of curiosity and found some helpful tips for those moving to Australia.
I especially liked this part:

Polite behaviour
"Please" and "thank you" are words which are very helpful when dealing with
other people, and buying goods or services.  When asked if you would like
something, like a cup of tea, it is polite to say "yes, please", or just
"please" if you would like it, or "no, thank you" if you do not. When you
receive something or have been helped, it is polite to thank the person by
saying "thank you".

And some translations of terms like bloke, dunny and fair dinkum. Some
important reading material I think! ;-)

Uh, isn't that just normal behaviour?  I think most Canadians know all
about politeness, I don't think we'll have any trouble there ;-)

Thanks to reading this group for the past 6 years, I've received quite
an education on Aussie slang.  I think we're prepared :-)

Of course!  We'll be in Purrth in 6 months probably to stamp our visa,
then head back here to tidy things up for the move.  When we come with
Vino, he will be in quarantine for 1 month in Purrth so we will be
spending much time there to visit with him.  We are both looking
forward to seeing you again, Helen :-)

Great that things are finally showing some signs of moving ahead. Like
a couple have already said, I didn't realize you had to put up moeny
before getting permission to immigrate. Course my only experience was
second hand, and way back in the mid 80s, and I guess the
circumstances were different. My sister met and married an Australian
while he was here in the states at college, and they moved to
Australian. Didn't live there long, just a couple years, then they
same back to California, split up and he eventually moved back to
Australian alone.

Vino probably threw some wild parties while you were gone, and all the
gooshy food was gobbled up by guests. (Every seen the commercial for
Tidy Cat litter where the hoomins come home to a house full of
partying cats.)
