I visit and participate in a number of newsgroups, but this one is far ahead
of the pack for sheer volume of participation! It's amazing but not
surprising how much we ailurophiles love to write and chat about our
kitties. What's also remarkable is how interesting and varied the posts are,
seemingly on an endless flow of topics. I have two questions. Does anyone
know of a newsgroup that tops this one on these grounds? And what do you
think has been the most interesting or off-beat topic the gang has
discussed? Huh? Just curious.

*No* newsgroup tops this one. There have been so many off topic
discussions, I can't say which was the most interesting.

I agree!  And we're much more tolerant of OT things here.  Much more
supportive of each other as a group, as well.  I feel like I've met everyone
personally :)

Definitely. =o) Naturally, we all like talking about our cats, and who else
but other devoted cat slaves love to HEAR about the funny/sweet things our
cats do to entertain us?

But I also like it that nobody snarls  about off-topic posts, here. It's a
very friendly atmosphere, and the off-topic posts prove that we have
interests in addition to our cats that round us out as people.  =o)

A couple of other groups I frequent are similar. There's a migraine one and
a UK cycling one. Both are friendly and tolerant of OT stuff. From the
migraine group a Stateside friend came to visit, and I've met a few of the
UK cycling group too.

Newsgroups with a common interest often are more like that than the
"general" groups (eg, tor.general, etc.) Two are rec.arts.comics.strips, a
quirky but oddly cohesive group that sometimes swings wildly off-topic,
often very entertainingly. And there's alt.tv.frasier, although its ranks
have understandably thinned since the series went off the air. Discussions
there are also offbeat,  like the content of the TV show. One English
contributor is a great fan of The Sopranos for instance and occasionally
lapses into gangster-speak! There are other newsgroups that carry the torch
for past radio & TV series - eg, alt.fan.goons where the folk remember and
imitate the characters in that great BBC Radio comedy series with Spike
Milligan, Harry Secombe and Peter Sellers. And alt.tv.avengers,  where they
still (with justification) lust after Emma Peel in her (back on topic:)
leather cat suit! BTW, her creator Dame Diana Rigg celebrated her 67th
birthday one week ago.

I thought that was just the way Donnie talks. ;)

I remember we once compiled a list of "Honorary On-Topic Topics," -- I
just googled it-- such as:
Christopher Walken (he was the king ;))
Star Trek
Vivien Leigh
Charles's Maris-Like Friend
Regional Dialects, Trans-Atlantic Cultural Wrangles
Chocolate
Sock Monkeys
Dogs and Cats
High End Video Equipment
Wine
David Lynch films
A selection of Aryan-looking film actors (e.g. James Spader, Jodie
Foster)
"Queer As Folk"
"Six Feet Under"
Music
The The-ay-ter

And so forth. ;)

It's hard to say which is most interesting, but I do enjoy the
discussions about culture, etc. There are people here from so many
different places, and since I've basically never been anywhere, I've
learned a lot just off this group.
