I've been thinking about what to name little Leo. I don't want to keep
the name Leo, because I know one Leo who is a very unpleasant person. I
thought of changing it into Leonardo, but I don't want anyone thinking I
named him after DiCaprio! Leonardo and Miranda would go pretty well
together, though.
I also thought of pursuing the The Tempest theme and call him Ferdinand.
But would that make him a bull? Then there's Caliban, but that might be
asking for trouble. Or Ariel, but since Disney's film that tends to be
understood as a female name. Hmmm.
Then there's the Estonian aspect. I looked at some Estonian names. I
like the surname Karu, which means bear. I'm definitely thinking of that
one. Lembit, meaning beloved, is another possibility. I would have to
get to know him better before I decide if he's a bear or a darling. ;o)
Bear would also be a kind of tribute to my Dad, whose name was Björn
(bear in Swedish).

Finding the right name can be _so_ difficult. I'd suggest narrowing it
down to 2 or 3 and then trying them out on the little chap: he's almost
sure to be able to let you know which is the right one :-)
Good luck

I like Leonardo - I think of DaVinci, not DiCaprio when I hear it!

I like Karu. It has a nice lilt and just sounds like a good cat name.
After I said I wasn't going to name the foster kitten I've got, I said
I was just going to call her Babycat and let the new owner name her.
But a name just popped in my head one day and it stuck to her. She is
so mean, DH said "You oughta call her Little Devil", and I said, no,
names can be a self-fulfilling prophesy, so I better name her Angel! It
just stuck.
So I guess her name is Angel.

Oh Sherry! I don't want to say it, but... You went and named her? You do
know what that means. ;o)

Hey! I'm a "Leo"! I agree about DiCaprio (he's a pig, I have it on good
authority) but I don't think you should change the little cat's name at this
point, do you? He's Leo. Leonardo. It's rather distinguished when you
think about it :) If you must, how about Max? Frank, Max and Miranda.

I like bear. That is what the family that got our poodle puppy chose for
him. Or Kobuk I think it was in Eskimo. I like Karu but you could try it
in other languages as well.
Our Jake is named for my father. Daddy was named Jacob Milton, but always
went by Milton. So it didn't feel too disrespectful to use his first name
for a cat. Besides a cat is never "just a cat"

My Dad loved cats, so I don't think he'd mind at all. I'm really leaning
towards Karu, but I'll have to get to know him better before I decide.

I think getting to know him before settling on a name. Cats/kittens
usually know their names, its our job to "figure" it out.

Other bear-alternatives:
French: ours
Italian: orso
Russian: medved (teddybear - mishka)
German: Bär (pronounced like the English bear)
or how about Nalle? (the equivalent of teddybear in Swedish)
Personally, I'd probably not name a kitty Karu, as it not only means
bear in Estonian, but also barren, infertile, meager etc. in Finnish.
There might be other words for bear in Estonian tho, like there's at
least karhu and otso (older Finnish), or björn, nalle, bamse etc. in
Swedish.

Ooo, I like Mishka - it would go well with Miranda!

Yes, but it also mean rugged, as in 'ruggedly handsome', which, of
course, I'm hoping he'll turn out to be as an adult. ;o) Now he's still
just kitten-cute. I'm leaning more and more towards Karu. As far as I
can tell, it's not pronounced like the Finnish word, but the u is
pronounced more like a Swedish u.

I know only 5 Estonian male first names. Arno, Coomas, Elmo, Endel and
Kaido.
You will soon know what his name is when you get him, though...it will pop
into your mind.

I'd think of DaVinci before I'd think of DiCaprio. I understand what
you mean though. I named Cleo after the very famous Queen Cleopatra
and a few people asked if I named her after some cheesy psychic who
called herself Miss Cleo in a huge number of TV ads. Well, Miss Cleo
hasn't been on TV for awhile and now nobody ever thinks of her first
anymore.

You can always let him pick from a few of your favorite choices. He
will probably only answer to one of the names.
