After about three weeks of nonstop highs in the 90s and several days
in the 100s, it looks like we may get a break from this
record-breaking weather.
There's a bit of cloud cover and I've heard some thunder grumbling.
Around noon, the thermometer read over 100, but now it's actually
displaying ... in the 80s!
This weather has really made me grumpy, though I shouldn't complain --
at least we have A/C in the house. I can't express in words how much
I would love some cooler weather.

Not impressed w/the dark skies/thunder as I've been looking @ that for about
a week now from upper-floor Capitol Hill, with no results.
BUT: *am* impressed w/your 80's thermom readings!!!
And if you think *you're* grumpy, pic the Hopitus w/no a/c and the Deadly
Duo laid out prostrate on hardwood floors as if they really were "dead"...I
have to carry them to water bowls and stick their noses in it to make sure
they drink! I'm drinking gallons of iced tea/CrystalLite and wondering why I
ever moved here a year ago (no, it was the grandbaby and that's what keeps
me here). Whatever condo I buy *will* have a/c, believe it. (tongue hanging
out like a d-pet)......

We've been doing pretty well here in southern CA. It's been hot (up to
106 the last few days) but the swamp cooler has been doing a good job
keeping it cool. Today, though, is a different story. It's VERY humid
here - I'd guess 90 to 95%. That means that swamp coolers don't do any
good. I'm sitting here melting, while the kitties are all imitating fur
rugs on the linoleum. I am SO very ready for the humidity to go away!

What's a swamp cooler?

Think a big fan which blows air through mats kept wet by a small pump.
As Dan said, they do a food jop cooling a house in hot dry climates -
but are pretty much useless when the humidity is high. All we had
growing up was a swamp cooler, which are prefectly suited for
Bakersfield California's hot dry summers.

If you are too poor to afford AC and can't provide a comfortable
environment for your cats, you shouldn't own them.

Yes it is the humidity that makes it feel so uncomfortable. Here in
Canada, the humidex, if any, is always reported along with the
temperature. The humidex has been over 100F for some time,
very unusual for Ontario. Once the humidity is lowered, we feel
a lot more comfortable. You really needs an AC to deal with
humid heat. I thought of getting a dehumidifer as well.

Sounds like time to go sit in a tub of cool water, and read. Change water
as it gets warm.
102 here but with 17% humidity a lot of trees and refusing to leave the
house it isn't too bad. If it doesn't cool down before we run out of food I
guess we will have to shop in the middle of the night like everyone else.

I know what you mean. After countless severe heat alerts, smog
alerts, and warnings to conserve electricity, we are finally in a bit
of cool spell, below 30C (86F). I can turn off the AC with little
discomfort. I still dread to see my hydro bill, which just came down
after the winter.

Yeah, we're supposed to have your weather by Monday + our normal 90+%
humidity. I think we're going to suffer a lot.

You are not alone, my friend. It has been absolutely brutal. Today in
Chicagoland, the temps are expected to reach 103 and with the heat
index, it will feel like 115!!!!!!!!!! I almost fell over when I saw the
115...even though that isn't the actual temperature!!!
Hang in there! :)

Eek!
Looks like we're back to the low 90s for highs ... gee, how cool ...
*sigh*
