Howdy, all!
Can anyone help a poor 'bat? I'm doing lots of volunteer work for the
local SPCA, and the goofs running the show have NO supplies, NO plans,
NO anything...Boy, could I tell you guys some STORIES!
Anyway, I desperately need to get hold of a bunch of low-cost cardboard
cat carriers. The head lady doesn't give any supplies to us...I've got
ONE cat carrier I can use (my others stay at home for MY kitties). The
other lady uses an UPSIDe-DOWN LAUNDRY BASKET WITH A ROCK ON TOP to
keep the cat(s) in one place as she drives along. MOST unprofessional.
I think the cardboard carriers are just the thing we need (we just
seized a trailerful of 5 adult cats the other day, and it was darn near
impossible, getting them to the cat shelter....took 3 trips to do it
with just me and the other lady.
I really think I got involved with a bad group........but what can I do
now? I'm the only one that even seems to care about the animals we
currently have in our "shelter" (and I'm using THAT term very loosely.
Any ideas, guys? Always glad to hear from other cat-fans...

And if you explain they are for a rescue they might give you a break. Sounds
like you are going to be the saviour of this group.

Just go by the liqour store and get liquor boxes
they are very sturdy, strong enough to pack books in when moving.
pop some airholes in them, you know, modify them
And they are free.
You might wanna take the dividers out, unless you wanna put
12 cats in one box.

We get cases of them for the shelter. I think we order them from
PetEdge.com. You can also check with some local shelters and see if they
have any used plastic carriers they might be willing to give or sell to you
really cheap. We get a lot of carriers that people donate to us, more than
we need sometimes. When we have an over supply we will bleach them out and
sell them to adopters for like $5.

We just picked up a couple of really good quality plastic carriers from the
county SPCA for a song. They get them when people surrender animals and
don't want the carrier back and I guess some are donated. At any rate they
sell them from time to time.

I looked at the PetEdge site and I couldn't find them. Now I don't know
where we get them from, we get most of our stuff from this place.
If you have a Petsmart, they might work with you on a price. I know ours is
all over us to work them on stuff, like have a display of adoptable animals
in the store, we get some amount of money per adoption, there's a grant we
can apply for from them, etc. They really like working with rescues, it
makes them look good.

We get them from the the same place the other poster listed. But they
go, fast! We are always looking for more. If you ever check out flea
markets or garage sales, you'll find the plastic ones often. And a
copy-paper box with lid works well in a pinch; you can poke holes in it
and secure the lid. If you have a print shop or office supply store,
they'll save them for you.
Advertise in your newspaper or freecycle forum. A lot of people also
have them lying around who don't use them anymore.
Good luck!
