After the "Karma" post on rpch+b I got curious about *my* posting history so
googled!  ;>  I didn't realize that I had posted on rpc (before the split)
so long ago.  I remember a few others from back then, David Stevenson, Joy.
Who else posted back then - and/or how long have you been posting here.
[BTW, I spent quite some time on the mothership between then and now.]

Here's one of my earlier posts (about Bandit, natch) from January 1997:

Wow CatNipped!
I never see you post that often. That is a long time! I assume the
regulars are the ones who have made this group what it is. GREAT!

I haven't posted *continuously* since then - I was absent for a few years in
between and only started posting here again about a year and a half ago or
so.  I'm just proud of being a part of this group *now* - this group is a
singular phenomenon on UseNet.  The love and caring here are seldom found in
real life and almost *never* on the internet!

Compared to you I am a newbie in rpca - first post was just over two years
ago. I only had four owners back then. The fact that I am slave to seven as
of this writing is all YOUR fault, rpca!!!!

I'm a relative baby on here too, just about a year now.  I had been adopted
against my will by two cats (at separate times) and as it seemed like they
intended to stay I thought that I must find an internet group to find out
more (being previously a d*g person) and these cats seemed, well,
"different"  ;-) and I didn't understand quite how they worked.
I searched the newsgroup lists.  There were quite a few cat ones and I
really don't know why I chose this one.  I am so glad I did.
I have never found it cliquey, I've always had great support here, both with
cat related questions, anecdotes and with my unfortunate ill health
recently.
Ordinary (if you will pardon the term!) rpca posters are the best.  None of
you are ordinary exactly, you know what I mean!!
May this group continue to be what is was until recently.  A large
international family who care about each other and their cats.

That's the critical question: how many of us have been posting on RPCA
form the start, and on RPC before RPCA existed?

I'm pretty much a newcomer to this group, as I only discovered it and health

However, I've been sporadically active in other newsgroups since 1997.

I've been on rpca after disaffection with alt.cats, late in 2000 I'd
guess.  Newgroups since late 80s, hey, I know someone who was on Arpanet
in 1974 (his college was one of the first signups, then he joined DEC
who was on Arpnet early).  Norm

I've only been on RPCA for a week or so! ;) RPCHB for a year and a half.
But I, too, got curious, and googled my old email addy and found posts
from 1995. I guess this year is my 10 year anniversary of using USENET.
What an accomplishment! ;)

subscribe to most of the cat groups. Now just one.

Heh....*that* was a trip in the "Way-back" machine...  Looks like my
first post in r.p.c. was around Sept. 13, 1994, and it looks like
I got sucked in to the declaw debate.  Hm...live and learn.  Nowadays
I'd just post one of the URLs for the truth about declawing, unless
someone had already posted it, in which case I'd just stay in lurk
mode.

I slipped more in to lurkdom after the split.  Sheer volume and the
feeling that all I would end up doing was parroting what someone had
already said tended to limit my postings.

I'm in my 11th year, long before the split. I believe that Yowie is just a
year behind me as is Pam.  At that time we were RPC.  We could read all the
posts in a short time.  But basically we are the same caring, interested and
interesting group of people we have always been and will continue to be.

I started reading as soon as the group appeared on my server, but because it
was my work server, they didn't allow posting (the first post to RPCA was
made on February 28, 1997).

The first post I ever made on Usenet after I got a home computer wasn't to
anecdotes, but it was made a few days afterwards. July 20th, 1997, IIRC. Of
course, I wasn't "Yowie" back then, and because I had no idea about spam. I
think it was made under vchapman@spider.connectivity.com.au or something
like that. I can barely remember now.

Guess that makes me an old timer.

I just went and Googled the very first thread, and I recognise some of the
names. I wonder what ever happened to those people?

I got my first online account in May 1995, and started posting on Usenet
soon afterwards. One of my regular groups was RPC (pre-split).

At the time, Melody and Harmony were 5 years old. Good grief, time flies!

When you posted about Prissy relatively recently, I had a "light bulb goes
on above my head" moment of recognition and went back to RPC. Sure enough,
I'd seen that kitty nickname before (Prissy Sissy with the Sassy Tail).
The posts are still there. :o)

I started posting in here in February 1999.  I was so naive that I didn't
think to post an introduction, I just started replying to posts and then
posting stories about the owners.

I have been on this group since early 99. I don't post as much as I
used to; but I do try to keep up with reading it. I remember a few
years ago the number of posts were maybe a 100 a day. Now it is
routinely twice as much and often 3 or even 4 times as much. But this
is where my friends are. In happiness and in sadness, with drama and
comedy, with funny business and serious stuff, information of all
kinds given and received. This group has it all.

It appears my first post here was February 1998. I found it interesting
that I seem to have come full circle.  Below is a combination of my
first post here and one of my last posts here:

1998: I've almost reached the end of my rope, I'm hoping someone can
help me. Hobbes is a male, orange stripped kitty who is probably around
4 - 5 months. He wandered up onto our patio last Thanksgiving and
adopted us. Half of the time he's as sweet a kitty as you'd ever want to
meet. He's active, enjoys running through the house and playing and
roughhousing with my husband. He snuggles with me in the mornings and in
the evenings when I get home from work….

2005: Then at the end of the evening he comes to me and gets behind my
head on the back of the couch and gives me a really hard headbutt saying
"I'm here, Meowmy" and then drapes himself across my shoulders and falls
asleep....awwwww...BarnABUS.

1998: ….he loves ice cubes and plays with glasses that have ice cubes in
them...to the point of tipping them over and spilling water (the other
day the glass fell on the floor and broke, nearly scared me to death
when I found him checking out the broken glass)….

2005: and if I'm not paying attention he'll hook a paw into my glass and
tip a glass full of ice and water on the floor - more often than not
pouringliquid over important equipment.  BarnABUS!

1998: He plays with the window blinds, pulling on them

2005: Last weekend one slat of the window blinds behind the headboard of
the bed was broken...just enough to provide a peek hole....BarnABUS!

1998: ...jumps onto the dining room table and bats at the chandelier, etc.

2005: The fish plates in the china cabinet are all just slightly askew -
BarnABUS!

I just googled it again - my first post was in October 2000. I didn't
know anything about newsgroups before that, but a co-worker showed me
how to read them, and I looked to see if there were any cat groups. I
lurked a bit in some groups, then settled on this one as by far the
nicest one. Rpcc baffled me completely back then, but I sometimes lurk
there now. I never read any of the other cat groups.

Looks like we started posting about six years ago, when we had Jasper

That's an excellent question. I was active on Usenet back in the mid-80's
but not on any cat groups. I didn't have a lot of luck on Google finding
out how far back my posts go. All I was able to find via Google is that I

2) You click on the link to "Advanced Groups Search"
3) On the window that says "Return only messages from the

5) Click on "Google Search" button.
6) When your results are returned, click on "Sort by Date" and go to

PS, if you've been here awhile, this can get pretty cumbersome.
Probably should guesstimate around when you think you started, and
limit the search by date-- you can do that, too.

Except that some of us were posting in rec.pets.cats *before* there were
"anecdotes", so it's bet to just search on all groups and then sort by day.
If you can remember the email address you used when you first started
posting, use that to search on.

That's the problem, remembering all the addresses I've used. The
earliest post of mine to this group I can find is July 1998, I was
mostly lurking in this and other cat groups before that.

Judging from a Google search, I have been posting in
rec.pets.cats.anecdotes since 2000, and I have been on USENET (with a
succession of email addresses) since 1989.

Thanks from me, too.
June 2003 for me, but I'm sure I've been here longer.

I tried that, and got a post form 1999 which clearly is nothing like
my earliest post.

July 2002 for me. Am I really that much of a newcomer? I guess I must be.
My previous Usenet experience was in non-cat-related groups.
CatNipped - 27 Jul 2005 15:54 GMT
OK, I was wrong actually it was August 1995 (I was searching for the wrong
email address) - but it still seems I remember posting earlier than this, so
maybe I had yet *another* email address I don't remember:

I started on alt.felines late 1998 and judging by my google posts seem
to have made the jump to RPCA in 1999/2000.

It was interesting, sad, funny and enlightening to read back through
some of my posts about the little things & anecdotes to do with my life,
and the group that I had forgotten about.

Many of the furry ones and hoomins are no longer with us and it was nice
to be touched by them again.
