They hate lotion

Samson won't come near me if I have any lotion of any kind on.  He
gets that same horrified look that he makes whenever he smells
peppermint and he backs away from me quickly.  Cleo doesn't look
horrified about the lotion.  She just gives me a nasty look that
basically says, "I know you are not seriously thinking of rubbing me
with that icky stuff on your hands."

I already buy the least smelly ones I can find because I hate to smell
the heavily perfumed lotions myself.  I'm glad they don't like the
smell though.  I'd really hate to have cat hair stuck to my hands by
lotion.

Reminds me of a story from my days as a pharmacy tech back in the old
days, mid 70s. Now days pharmacies find it cheaper to buy a lot of the
things we used to make, but back then we were making hand lotion. It
was supposed to be for in patient and staff use, but the boss decided
it was being used way too fast, so people must be taking it home. So
he told me to double the amount of rose oil the recipe called for. We
only made one batch that way, and it was still sitting on the shelves
when I changed duty stations a year later. But it stopped the
pilfering, there was a STRONG rose scent long after you used it.

I like rose scent. Even add a drop of rose essential oil to my sunscreen.
Rose essential oil is supposed to be good for 'mature skin'.

Hence the rosewater & glycerine lotions (still available) of yesteryear :)

I do something *truly* old fashioned.  Ever heard of Bag Balm?  Originally
sold in the late 1800's to prevent chapping of cow's teats from milking;
it's a very thick grease.  Just before bedtime smooth some on your hands and
then put on cotton gloves and sleep in them.  Makes your hands so soft and
smooth.

The first time I did this Persia thought the gloves were something to be
killed so she attacked the gloves - while my hands were in them!  It was so
funny!  She soon got used to them.  I do this every couple of weeks (I can't
sleep in gloves every night, otherwise how would I feel the soft kitty fur
when she snuggles up next to me and I pet her?)

Where would you buy something like that?

Walmart has it in the pet section.

Walgreen's!  It comes in a green square tin, from Vermont.  I guess cows had
to worry about chapped bags in all that cold :)  Walgreen's also sells plain
white cotton gloves (at least around here).

Do you know what the ingredients are?  I'm asking because I once tried that
trick with regular lotion and my hands broke out in a rash (I'm *so*
allergic to different things, besides just having "sensitive" skin).  I can
only use Lubriderm "Seriously Sensitive" lotion because of that.

I think we'll need Howard's help here!  It says 8-Hydroxy Quinoline sulfate
(0.3%) in a Petrolatum Lanolin base.

I don't know if I've ever tried that stuff.  I guess I can try it on an
out-of-the-way spot to see if I react.

I was going to to say plain lanolin. That's something we used to get
in bullk, and then package in smaller containers for patient use. I
don't remember adding anything to it, pretty sure we just melted it
and poured in into 2 oz jars. Kind of messy stuff, greasy and sticks
to everything, which I guess is why gloves would be needed if you're
leaving it on overnight.

Steve, yup, the gloves are required unless you want grease all over your
sheets, pillow cases and cats!  My mom used to do this with petroleum jelly
back in the 1940's; she and her sister used the cotton gloves too.  I think
the lanolin is better but heh... what do I know?  I was born in the wrong
time, I know that!

My doctor did recommend petroleum jelly for my dry skin.

Hi CN,
(Reading off my can of Bag Balm) The ingredients are 8-Hydroxyquinoline
Sulfate .3% in a petroleum/Lanolin Base.
My mom used it on her cows to prevent chapping after milking - she would
wash their teats off with warm soapy water, rinse them, then milk them, and
then rub the bag balm on.  I have seen cows dragging their teats in the
heavy snow, so anything you can do to help them feel better (and you not get
kicked for grabbing a cracked teat) is a step in the right direction. <G> It
is a antiseptic, and we also used it for general wound care on ourselves.
Bag Balm for scratches & cuts, Old Spice for itchy bug bites. We smelled
REALLY good! <G>

Sounds good!  Like I told Jill, I'm going to try it on an out-of-the-way
spot on me and see if I react, then I'll give it a try on my hands.

Don't forget the cotton gloves!  This stuff is *really* greasy.  Lanolin is
extracted from the wool of sheep.

Well, I've mentioned how, having lost so much weight at age 53 I now look a
bit like a Sherpe puppy...  Do they make whole-body gloves???!  ;>

Shar Pei, dear :)  http://www.sharpeis.com/

They are so ugly they are cute!  Formerly known as Chinese Temple Dogs.

A former boss used to breed them.  When they had a pup whose mom's umbilical
got wrapped around his paw and cut off the blood supply, resulting in a
hairless paw, he wanted to have the pup put down.  His wife said "NO WAY"
and took the pup to the vet.  The pup survived but wasn't "breeding stock"
(stupid MF ex-boss, after the $600 per pup) but at his wife's instance they
kept him.  You go girl!  He was a sweet pup.

Just use the lotion on your hands!  To quote Billy Crystal doing Fernando
Lamas, "You look Marvelous!"

Shar Pei in Chinese means sand paper.

Yes, I also use a rosewater spray instead of a toner after washing my
face.  I am looking into making my own rosewater. Lavender water
is also nice.

I use Cetaphil (no perfume).  TuTu tries to lick it off, so it must taste
good to her.   MLB

I use Cetaphil too. It's great stuff!
and
I have also used olive oil on my lips during the winter.
