Semi-OT: filters in Thunderbird

Victor Martinez - 17 Jul 2005 18:17 GMT I seem to be having a weird problem with my filters in Thunderbird. Most of the time, they work just fine and I don't see any messages by the trolls. However, sometimes they come through, and when I try to create the filters again, it lets me, like the original filters were somehow deleted. Does anybody have any advice?

I don't see any troll messages. You mean messages like the one in which you called a perfectly nice person a c*nt last week?

I use something called Self Control Version 1.1. I know who I don't want to read and just click past their name. Works great, and my software came built-in. Clearly YMMV.

It seems to create the filter based on the email addy. If the troll changes their addy, you'll see his/her post. In other words, one will have to keep making filters as often as the troll changes their email addy.

Little troll seeks the attention.

Little troll seeks the attention. Either that, or you are so self-important that you attribute events so that they revolve around you.

Little troll seeks the attention. I don't suppose they are talking about me changing my address last night, and in their self inflated importance they did not read why I did it. Regardless, just another example of their ignorance.

At least I was NOT talking about you. Funny way to react tho, at once assume one is talking about you and give instant insult... :(

Might have something to do with cross-posting. I have to set up filters for each NG that I subscribe to. IOW something set up for rpca does not work for rfc. Also depends where they post from. If they use a different email address, but the same nickname, you have to use the advanced filtering. (Use the "More" button" to add rules). That works for me. HTH Cathy

Cathy, why are you promoting hatred and elitism, you know it smells like catchit in here! You're not helping.

Gigs up nutjob!
How about contributing something useful to the group!
If the quality of your posts does not improve DRAMATICALLY I will killfile you on that point alone.

I use Thunderbird for e-mail, and recommend and install it for others - I find it most useful. However, as a news client it ranks with the very worst I have ever tried - I found it useless when compared with Agent. There is a reason why the news feature is barely mentioned in the program description, reviews, and documentation: it sucks.
You should, of course, avoid anything from Microsoft, but there are quite a number of commercial, free, and shareware news readers available, many of which have quite good filtering - address and subject, and specific and global are the minimum for a decent filter feature.

Have you installed an upgrade of Thunderbird recently? If you have and you installed it on top of an older version this type of thing can happen. I would recommend installing a new version of Thunderbird into a separate directory. You can also search bugzilla.mozilla.com to see if what you experience has been reported as a bug.

I've noticed the same behavior on occasion. I haven't found a good work-around.
In fact, it has recently been happening often enough that I now read news using the Pan newsreader.

Christine K. - 18 Jul 2005 17:30 GMT > I'm shopping for a new free newsreader now. I miss trn. I've had recommendations for Gravity, downloaded it myself, but haven't quite got my head around the inner workings of it yet. I must be too stuck with the ways of Thunderbird. Gravity is an open source program and it is available for example here: http://cws.internet.com/file/11436.htm It is recommended that you do the tutorial that comes with the program, but I have the bad habit of plunging right into a program and if I can't use it properly at once, I'll let it sit for a while and consider reading the help file or doing tutorials... ;)
Both Agent and Free Agent are available here: http://www.forteinc.com/agent/download.php (one download, so apparently some features switch off if you haven't paid for it and it becomes Free Agent)
Xnews has been quite OK too, haven't tried it myself for quite some time now tho. A fairly new version available at the same site as Gravity: http://cws.internet.com/file/11571.htm

I just downloaded Gravity and went through some of the tutorial materials. In the section on Rule Filter I saw this capability: "The article is cross-posted to more than X groups."
That means Gravity can block all cross-posted messages!
I'll play with it a little this afternoon (if I get these fires handled, that is) and will post notes on how to configure it to block cross-posted messages.

Note that you'll also have to install GTK for Windows to use Pan. Both can be found at http://pan.rebelbase.com/download/releases/0.14.2/WINDOWS/
