A friend of mine has a problem with her cat peeing all over the
apartment. She says it's been getting worse for months - the cat will
pee anywhere and everywhere... she took it to the vet the other day
and the vet said that it doesn't have a bladder infection, and it's
probably behavioural. They said that she could either give the cat
kitty-prozac to try and tranquilise it, or return it to the animal
shelter where she adopted it because it's obviously not happy living
with her and having to be left alone in the apartment for most of the
day while she works and studies. She's horribly upset about all this,
and there's got to be a better answer! Can anyone help her?

She could try Feliway, it comes in a spray and plug in diffusers.

A house is not a home, without a cat.

Thanks! I should have thought of that... I passed your message on to
her.

If the Feliway doesn't work, she can try Rescue Remedy, it calms cats
too. Has she considered getting another cat to keep him company? I
mean, if he's peeing because he's bored/alone, that might help. :)

That's the first thing I suggested to her, but alas she lives in one
of those all-too-common apartment buildings where you're only allowed
to have one cat. It seems like a really stupid rule to me - don't they
know that cats are MUCH more trouble taken singly than in pairs?! I
know we're having trouble finding an apartment which is happy for us
to have our two cats without charging a fortune for the privelege :(

Good grief , the first thing she should do is change her vet. Did the
vet do a urine test?
This link will give you more info.

Get another cat, or try leaving on the radio or TV and making sure the
cat has lots of toys available so he is stimulated even when alone.

(Nocturne was SO CLINGY when left alone all day and getting Smokey
didn't fix much...only when we got the bitties did she manage to
tolerate our jobs/school....)

Actually she says the vet did a thorough checkup and ruled out any
physical problem... I'm wondering if it could possibly be a food
allergy? Can't they cause behavioural problems like this? She hasn't
changed the cat's diet, but I know allergies can crop up at any
time...
