I've been posting OT a lot ... let me try to post something on topic
=)

When Oscar's particularly happy to see me or Eric, she drools.  As far
as I can tell, this only started in the last year or so.

Another point is that she doesn't like to sit on my lap when I'm at
the computer.  If I pick her up and put her on my lap while I'm
sitting on my office chair, she inevitably jumps right back off.

Except two days ago.

I got home, greeted Oscar, and sat down to check email or something.
I noticed Oscar was not only right at my feet, but actively purring
without me even touching her.  Not typical at all.  So I picked her up
and gently put her in my lap.  She ... stayed put.

Not only that, but the purr motor really got going and she started
drooling.  A lot.  I was wearing shorts, so not only did I get drool
on my shorts, but I had droplets running down my thighs.  She was so
drooly her whiskers and mouth were wet!

Sometimes I wish that Oscar were more of a lap fungus type cat, but I
don't think moments like these would be as sweet if she were happy to
be in my lap just any old time.

Well, the way she usually is, I would say, take the lap-sitting and
drippy drooling whenever you can get it. Drooling while purring is
bliss. But I wonder what the change of behaviour is about? My cats
will sit in my lap only as long as I am actively petting them. They do
not want my attention on the keyboard or anything else or they will
get down in a huff.

That may be the explanation.  When I'm at my computer, I can't seem to
help myself -- I'm constantly scanning for new emails, newsgroup
messages, etc.  By definition, when I'm in the office, I'm not paying
attention to her.

There may be another explanation.  When I first got Oscar, I was a
serious EQ (computer game) addict.  Nothing was allowed to come
between me and the game while I was engaged, which was much of the
time.  I don't recall ever getting annoyed at her for anything
chair-related, but I do remember having to drag her out of the space
below my monitor several times (she would get threatened by my typing
and attack my hands, and I don't mean playfully) ... maybe she
extended the "no desk" rule to include the chair.  She hasn't been on
the desk since she was a kitten.

She does like to lie under/near my feet while I'm at the computer, which
makes me nervous, but it's cute and sometimes I'm allowed to "pet" her
belly with my feet.
