... in a wee cage in my library are two *tiny* voles. Youngsters. Waffles
brought one in - alive & unmarked, with her usual announcement of "Mowz!"
then dropping it at my feet. As it was a youngster it wasn't wise enough to
run, but stayed at my feet so I could pick it up. No sooner had I placed
Waffles's offering in the cage, then I heard noises of paw swiping with
claws extended... around the corner in the hall was Marble, *not* being kind
to his playmate and about to deliver the final blow. I managed to grab the
vole - also a youngster and popped it in the cage. I was not hopeful of this
one.

However, several hours later and sitting in a little bed of straw, munching
on cucumber, greens and mixed seeds are two of the cutest rodents on the
planet :-) I kid you not - each one is less than two inches long and less
than an inch wide... tiny balls of fur, very much alive and well.

Come morning I'll release them into the undergrowth on the banks of the
stream.

AWWWW!  Got a camera?  I'd love to see pics of the little voles! (I don't
think I've ever actually *seen* a vole)

I'll try to get one. I'm a bit concerned any flash would scare them. I'll
have to see if I can get one of them when they are *on* the hay as opposed
to charging around *in* the hay :-)

This reminds me of something John told me happened at his last art show.
There was a sculptor set up in the booth next to him and as they were
opening their tents for the day people (other artists) were standing around
ooohing! aaahing! next door.  It wasn't a sculpture they were looking at.
Apparently during the night a mama raccoon had deposited two baby racoons on
a pedestal behind an eagle sculpture and gone off looking for food.  The
little ones were content to sit there, waiting for mama to return.  Everyone
was exclaiming about how cute they were.  They also wondered what to do with
them.  In the end, they were caught in a box and let loose down by the
stream that ran through the park.  Hopefully mama found them (probably so).
John didn't have a camera (dammit) but he was still talking about how cute
those babies were two days later.

Ah, the "catch and release" method. ;)

I wish Baggy would leave them alive. So far only one mouse has recovered
after being caught by him. The frogs do better, he's caught a few but
doesn't know what to do with them, so far they've all survived.

A house is not a home, without a cat.

Back before I bought my house, and was still living with my parents, I
got home one day and noticed a dry leaf on the floor in front of the
living room couch.  I bent over to pick it up, and it scurried a few
inches, revealing that it was actually a half-grown mouse.  I was able
to scoop it up in my hands, and turned an empty jar into a makeshift
mouse cage.  We had an indoor/outdoor cat, and hadn't seen any other
signs of mice in the house, so I suspect Tinkerbelle had brought the
mouse inside and then lost it.  It did not appear to be injured.

We kept the mouse for several days, and it got tame enough that I
decided to release it far enough from the house that it was unlikely
to be caught again by our cat (it would have to take its chances with
other predators).  I carried the jar into some vacant land nearby, and
decanted the mouse onto my palm.  It sat up in my hand and washed its
face.  I then set it down in some tall grass, and it scurried away.
