She's chirping and playing so I think she's okay. I'm going to give her a
daily dose of the Ornacycline for 5 days just to be safe. It scared me the
way she looked this morning. The only time I've seen my other birds looking
like that they wound up on the bottom of the cage (if you get my drift).
Thanks for the purrs (please keep 'em coming just in case).

That's great news, Jill, what a relief!

Good to hear. Is it normal to give birds antibiotics without getting
'em checked at the vet first? I'm just thinking I wouldn't take
antibiotics without checking with my doc ... especially with the
concerns about antibiotic resistances.

Trouble with birds is they get so sick so fast that it is probably safer to
go ahead and treat them. If they are sick the time to get to the vet and
the stress of the trip can be fatal.

I always keep a supply of Ornacycline on hand and yes, it's fairly normal to
treat a bird this way. As for resistance, Peaches is 2-1/2 years old (still
a baby, really, since she could possibly outlive me) and this is the first
time she's been given a dose. She hasn't had an opportunity to build up any
sort of resistance.
If she were to show signs of further illness I'd take her to the vet, but as
you know I don't have a job. I would not put my concerns about that ahead
of the health of my pets, but as someone who has owned birds since 1966 I
also know if they go downhill fast there is usually nothing a vet can do.

Okee doke. I didn't mean to sound confrontational; just curious about
this practice. I know nothing about bird care. I'd imagine it's
harder to diagnose problems with them than with more common pets.

You didn't sound confrontational at all. It was a legitimate question. And
yes, birds are harder to diagnose which is why vets who treat them have to
specialize in avian care prior to dealing with them. Persia's vet boards
birds but doesn't have any idea how to treat them.

Good! So glad to hear that. Don't know much about parrots but with
parakeets "hunched over with feathers ruffled" is bad.

Yep, that's why I got so concerned. She's my first parrot, albeit a small
one (the smallest of the South African parrots, in fact). I've always had
parakeets until I got her but the signs are the same, be it a finch,
parakeet or parrot.

Late coming in to this, Jill, but purrs coming in for Peaches -- glad she's
hung in there so far.

Glad to hear Peaches is feeling better, Jill. =o) I hope her trouble is
past. Pan is TRYING to purr, but he keeps licking his lips, instead.
Naughty kitty! Francesca and Nina are being much more faithful.
