I thought maybe the rat had gone. The cats had mostly lost interest,
although occasionally Nanki-Poo would lie under my desk, as though he
thought the rat was still behind it. Someone suggested that it was gone,
and the cats were reacting to its residual smell. I sprayed a deodorizer
behind my desk - too much of it, actually; I can still smell it. Apparently
that was a mistake.
While I was sitting in the living room watching TV this evening, the rat
wandered into the room. Lindy took off after it, and they ran toward this
end of the house. A few minutes later, Lindy wandered out into the living
room.
Nanki-Poo was in here a little while ago, acting very interested in what
might be behind or under the desk. However, he's left the room now too, so
he may just have been remembering that's the last place he knew where the
rat was.
The smell of the deodorizer is still strong, so it apparently masks the
smell of the rat. That means that it's still in the house, but neither the
cats nor I know where. :-(

I get an occasional feild mouse
I just set a trap
works 100% of the time, just put the trap out of reach of the cats(s)
peanut butter works great

Any place that's out of reach of the cats is out of reach of me.

Ugh, I think it might be time for a trap. If you have no place to put
it where it's definitely out of the cats' reach, you could get one of
those little box traps that traps it alive. I know it will be horrid
to have to pick it up with a live rat in there and let it go
somewhere, but maybe you could get your neighbour kid to do it, the
one who feeds the cats when you're out. He might be up for some extra
pocket money ;-)

That might be a possibility. However, there is a good chance it is gone
now. When last sighted, it was in the living room. That part of the house
is open to (among other rooms) the kitchen, where the cat flap is. Last
night I put both cats and their food in my bedroom, and shut all internal
doors. Today the cats don't seem to think the rat is in the house. I'm
hoping it found its way out the cat door.

I hope you're right, it's no fun living with rats in the house.

Good advice, Britta! I've used the live traps on mice before, do they
make them big enough for a rat?
Boy-kids are great for chores like that. I once paid one a dollar to
scrape up a dead frog from the driveway I accidentally ran over. Worth
every penny:-)

I don't know, I guess I just assumed that *everything* is available in
the US ;-) I do know they have nothing like that around here and I've
been struggling with my rats for a while. I think the problem is
finally solved, I had a guy come and totally line my kitchen cabinet
with thick plywood. It's fortified!

I bet! I should have paid someone to dispose of my previous rats that
I'd caught. Shudder. One time Dennis dropped a brick on a half dead
rat. Ooooh boy, was it flat :-(

I don't know what your local councils are called in the US. The place you
pay your local taxes to. They would certainly come out straight away free
of charge, pest control department, to sort out your rat. Or mice or any
infestation that is considered a health risk for an ordinary householder
here. Don't you have that service?
I am not considered an "ordinary householder" as I have chickens. That's
just asking for rats, they say, so I have to deal with them myself with the
help of KFC & BF (who proudly announces he cort 2 baby r's this week and
brought them to his meowmie..) and would like Mimi to write and congratulate
him for being so brave ;-)

Our City Council certainly wouldn't do anything like that. There's a chance
the County Department of Health might be interested in a rat, but not in a
mouse. The County Animal Control Department would rent me a trap.
