Ahhh, lidocaine spells relief

I took the advice of whichever wise person suggested lidocaine.  I
bought the Hawaiian Tropics version because it had the highest
percentage of that lovely active ingredient.  It doesn't even smell
bad.  I'd expected to smell like horse linament.

Too bad it says to only use it 3-4 times a day =/

I am now equipped with pure vitamin E oil, aloe gel, lidocaine gel,
and of course my trusty unscented moisturizer.  I have sunscreen, face
sunscreen, and a tube of stuff for lips, ears, etc.  I went out and
bought a few sleeveless shirts I can get away with at work, though
trying them on with a sunburn was a misery.  I think I'm all set,
though I'd best pack the aloe or something for tomorrow's work day.

Of course, all of this could have been avoided if I'd applied
sunscreen either before the hike (I thought about it but decided, eh,
it's two hours till we get started; I should wait) or at any point
along the trail (when I in fact had a tube of the stuff in my
Camelbak, but for reasons unknown to me simply didn't bother to apply
it).

I'd be claiming brain fog due to exercise at high elevation.

Yes, but unfortunately that doesn't explain why I didn't apply the
sunscreen *before* the hike.

Actually, I do think I know what happened, although it makes no
logical sense.  My brain was entirely concerned with staying hydrated.
You see, about two weeks ago, a teenage girl died at Moab while
mountain biking with her family.  A number of things went wrong, but
it mostly came down to exertion with no cover and too little water.

While I didn't wear sunscreen, I had three liters of water -- enough
that I didn't finish it all by the time we got back.  I was also busy
being a mother hen about my friend's water supply, as she only has
room for 1.5L in her fanny packy style 'bak.  And her dog was also
carrying plenty of water.  I think I spent so much time obsessing
about having enough food and water that those thoughts crowded out
worries about skin.

(Yes, there was plenty of water all around, but Giardia is a major
concern in Colorado.  Of course, if it were a choice between a
possible unpleasant illness and a certainty of death by dehydration,
I'd choose to drink the mountain water!)

I did the same things once. Got the giardia and the sunburn. Fun!

Be sure you don't get the Lidocaine mixed up with the Iocaine Powder.
That would be IN-con-CEIV-able! (Although it's possible that that word
doesn't mean what I think that it means - big grin).

I had something like this happen to me when I was 22 years old.  My
ex-husband wanted to go to a man-made "beach".  This place had trucked in
tons of white sand and created a big swimming pool with a sand bottom and a
fountain in the middle.  This was around 1982 when they weren't talking
about sunscreen... it was more like, if you use OIL you'll tan!  Yeah,
you'll tan.  You'll also FRY like a potato in a pan of bacon grease!

I was in severe pain all over (bikini, don't you know).  At that time I
worked in a chain restaurant which required us to wear polyester zip-front
dresses as a uniform.  You want to talk about painful to put on with a
sunburn?  OMG... I thought I was going to die.  But I couldn't call in
because my charming husband didn't have a job and we needed the money.  So I
put on pantyhose (OUCH) and a bra (OUCH), zipped up my trusty scratchy
polyester dress and then had to smile and be gracious and serve hot food
from a hot kitchen, which just made me feel all the worse because I was
already HOT!  I feel your pain.

Oh ... my ... god.  No, no, your experience is far worse than mine
will be.  And fortunately, I can dress pretty casually at work, so I
will be wearing clothing that doesn't touch the burned areas.

That would be awful.
