Walking in PetSmart

Today, Little Miss and I went to PetSmart. She's been restless for the
last couple of days, and when she's like that, it means she needs a
PetSmart fix.

She usually just sits in my arms while I push the cart with my stomach.
Sometimes she'll sit on my shoulder, and lately she's been all too
willing to ride in the cat, sitting atop my purse.

All kinds of pet lovers go to PetSmart, which makes it great for a cat
who needs an attention fix. It's the one place I know where all the
kids and adults want to pet her. She sits there in all her little
princessy glory and soaks in the attention. When it's time to check
out, she'll sniff the things on the counter or just sit and watch
everyone, who comes up and says something like "it's a cat."  They'll
want to know what kind she is, how old she is, and can they pet her.

The one thing Little Miss usually does not do in PetSmart is walk.
Although she's on her harness and leash the whole time we're in the
store, she doesn't like to walk. There are too many dogs and too many
tall people, and a little kitty could get trampled on down there.

Today, she walked!  Not far, but she walked. She walked about one
fourth of one aisle.  I am so proud of her!  She got extra scritches
for being one brave kitty.  It was really busy today, but she took it
in stride. Now that we're home again, she is calm and happy again.  I
think she just needed her attention fix for the week.

She is a dear little thing.

The most interesting animal I saw in PetSmart (except, of course, for all
the beautiful, fascinating cats! :-) )was a yellow and white snake that a
guy was carrying in a boot.

Another time I saw someone with a huge Great Dane by the display where they
have open bins of dog biscuits.  Unbeknownst to the owner, the dog reached
in and licked biscuits in each of the bins as it walked by!  I made a mental
note never to buy biscuits from those bins (should I ever think of buying
them as gifts, of course, not for Sundance and Rebecca!).

I don't have a PetSmart nearby but PetCo lets people bring in their pets.  I
was looking for cat treats when a woman brought in a Jack Russell terrier
(terror) pup to pick out a collar.  The thing was practically bouncing off
the walls, but it was so cute!

Persia would freak if I took her to a shop that had other cats and dogs in
it... she'd think she was at the vet.

On a side note, one of the PetCo's often has adoption stations for retired
Greyhound racers.  They are the friendliest dogs and not really that big; if
I had room for a big dog run I'd surely adopt one.

I remember a program on Animal Planet about a group, I think in the SW
US somewhere, devoted to finding homes for retired racers.
(Unfortunately, retirement for racing greyhounds all to often means
being put down.) From what I remember, they usually turn into big
laidback lapdogs, though they retain the love for running and you have
to watch letting them off a lead as they may take off and not come
when called.

They're still looking for that mechanical rabbit!  This is why they'd have
to have a good-size dog run or a large fenced yard.  There is a dog track
just across the Mississippi River in West Memphis, AR, so there are a lot of
retired greyhounds to be adopted around here.  The ones I've seen were only
about 40 pounds, which is really a medium-size dog when you think about the
size of Shepherds, Labradors, etc.  They had the sweetest temperaments.
Yep, I can see one becoming a lap dog, easily.
