My mom has been doing chemo for her spinal cancer for 7 months now with no
problems, but she is now starting to experience problems. She has been
feeling really lousy for the last week, and finally went to see her doctor
yesterday afternoon. Her doctor's reaction was to call an ambulance to
take her to the hospital.

She is suffering from neutropenia, and is very anemic. She hasn't eaten
anything for a couple days. When Nancy and I visited her in the hospital
she was having difficulty forming coherent sentences. My brother reports
she had been having that problem the day before as well.

Some purrs for a speedy recovery would be appreciated.

Purrs on the way. Just when things start to go right something else
happens. :-) I do hope your mother recovers soon.

Must be very exhausting to get chemo for 7 long months. A friend is also
going through chemo and it is very taxing for her.
I heard anemia is common among cancer patients.  Purrs going out to your
mother.

Purrs, puppy grunts, purrayers and songs are headed your way from
Western Colorado.

Hoping that the hospital staff can get her neutropenia under control,
and that fixing this will help her appetite return.

Megapurrs are on their way, Dan.  You and your family, both two- and
four-legged, seem to have been having more than your share of problems
lately.

I hope this problem for your mom is resolved quickly.

Many purrs.  From personal experience as well as clinical, the inability
to form coherent sentences can be due to reversible anemia. They held
off giving me a transfusion until about a week after my bypass. As my ex
put it, it was only then that I recognized she had been dressing
rather...exotically for my morale.

Depending on the amount of oxygen-carrying ability in her blood, an
transfusion of packed red cells may have an immediate result. In
general, you need two of three numbers (red blood cell count,
hemoglobin, hematocrit) to assess oxygen-carrying capacity.

Growth stimulants for red (epoietin) and white (filgrastim and others)
cells are often extremely useful on chemo.

Good luck.

Please let us know how she's doing.   Hugs to all.

Purrs and prayers for your mom that she is comfortable and getting the care
she needs.

And also for your family.  It is so hard to watch someone you love fight and
not to be able to get in there and do it for them,

Also thanks for answered prayers.  So glad that things have worked out so
you are home or close to home now when you so much need to be.  Even if it
did take hernias and truck wrecks and sick cats to keep you there.

Hi Dan,

It seems like our mothers are in sync.  I remember you posting about
your mother about the same time my mother started her chemo.  Last
month, my mother went through the anemia thing.  She ended up in the
hospital for about 5 days and was given about 10 pints of blood while
there. I was told by many people that her situation was not unusual and
chances are she could go through it again before all is done.

It took four days for it all to really kick in for Mom.  On the 4th day
in the hospital, she finally warmed up (she was freezing under blankets
while we sat there sweating), her elimination issues cleared up, and her
appetite returned. They let her go home on the 5th day.  She went back
to the doctor last week, and they're holding off her chemo for another
four weeks.  On the bright side, last Monday's CAT scan shows the tumor
is smaller.

So hang in there, and keep the faith.  It's hard, I know.  I got three
kitties sending out cancer stompin' purrs your way.

My three are on the purr patrol, Dan.  Your poor Mom... that's a LONG time
to be receiving chemo.  I hope she feels better soon. But good for her
doctor to send her to the hospital for  the needed care right away.
