Pearl has not greeted me at the door since this whole heart thing started. I
really missed it. Often she comes sleepily trotting to the door meowing.
Sometimes she comes swearing up a storm as though I were gone for days.
Today it was slower but it was a definite greeting like the old days. I
think her major problem has been not feeling good from diarreha (I can never
spell that word). I can't tell what causes it as she has always been a bit
predisposed and teh xrays from teh er vet showed a lot of gas (which she has
always had that comment.) I really thought it got better a few days ago, but
the last two days she had it again. I don't know if the prednisone is
exaccerbating her propensity to it or what. Today, she did not have to have
a pred, but only her heart meds. Tomorrow we go to 1/2 pred every other day.
I really want to get her off of that. I know my vet considered keeping her
on the small dose indefinitely but I would rather see if the lasix alone can
keep her cough at bay. Anywho, definitely the best sign I"ve had from her in
a week and a half.

Karen,

This is really neat!!  Also, I was thinking of you and Pearl this morning
while filling the cat bowl up.  I forgot to look for an update by the time I

Will do. Oh yeah, the other good thing was she got up on me on the couch.
Hasn't been doing that much either.

That's good news, Karen.  I'll be thinking about Pearl and sending her
healing thoughts.

Rusty had diarrhea on and off for months last year. Every morning I had
to clean the floor. Not a pretty sight to wake up to. TED couldn't find
anything wrong with him except lots of fur in the stool. Finally we
switched his prescription food to Hill's I/D. Right away the run stopped.
So I am sticking with I/D even though it is the most costly prescription
food so far.
Rusty sends get well  purrs to Pearl.

My vet suggested adding canned pumpkin. Pearl might eat that just by itself
actually, but to start I just mixed a couple of teaspoons in with food. She
chowed it down, so we'll see if that helps.

I have been feeding Rusty canned pumpkin for years - 1 teaspoon a day
as suggested in a vet column. It didn't help his diarrhea last year.
Rusty loves it. He eats it directly from the spoon, no mixing needed,
same with yogurt, which has gut healthy bacteria.
The vet said not to give Rusty too much pumpkin, as plant is not good
for cats with urinary problems. It raises the urine pH..

That's good to know, although probably more applicable to boys. My vet
recommended a tablespoon in the a.m and again at night. I started with just
about 2 tsp. I don't know about 2 whole tbsps.!

I think 1 tsp is probably only enough for maintenance purposes. Perhaps 2
tbsps is not bad if Pearl will take it. How much does she weigh? Maybe the 1
tsp I gave Rusty wasn't enough for his diarrhea. You may want to ask your
vet about yogurt. I take yogurt myself when I was on antibiotics.
Now I eat yogurt regularly, and so does Rusty. The vet said cats are
lactose intolerant. But the bacteria cultures in yogurt break down the
lactose. I am lactose intolerant myself and have no problem with yogurt.

Please keep us posted on Pearl's probress.

I was thinking about trying a little yogurt too. Poor girl. SHe can barely
have a meal that doesn't have *something* added in. She is 12 lbs. 9 oz .
however, I do think she has lost a little bit. I've got to get a scale. I'm
positive Sugar has lost a little. She is really looking pert. I definitely
think they are both benefitting from not having dry food lying about.

If Pearl likes yogurt, you can give it to her as a snack. Pumpkin and
yogurt are snacks for Rusty. He gets them in between meals. He comes
running for them.
Sometimes I give him pineapple juice too when I am having pineapple.
But another post here said pineapple juice for hairball is a myth,
contrary to what my vet told me.

Rusty  only weighs in at 8 lb. He lost some weight last year when he
had diarrhea. I don't have a scale either. I just weigh myself on the
vet's scale whenever I go buy prescription food. Both Rusty and I  have
always been underweight and should put on some weight.

I wonder if he was thinking of papaya enzyme. I think that is the thing that
helps with hairballs.

No, he said fresh squeezed pineapple juice. A google search shows
someone mentioned that they use pineapple juice at the Ontario Vet.
College for hairball. Pineapple has an enzyme called bromelain.
Now you give me the idea of feeding Rusty papaya whenever I eat it.

BTW, how old is Pearl?

Pearl is 8 y.o..

I think that might be the same enzyme. Have to look it up.

So Pearl is a senior cat too.
No the enzyme in papaya is called Papain.

Papaya has a similar enzyme (ie, degrades protein) called papain.
Again, it's not clear either enzyme actually degrades hair protein. I
can personally vouch for the digestive quality of papaya enzymes,
though. If I don't wash it off after eating, my lips get all raw and
hurt for days.

IIRC pineapple has something in it which helps reduce inflammation.  My
mom said eating some daily really seemed to help with all the swelling
she had after her mastectomy surgery.

Good luck Karen. I've been reading all of your posts about Pearl
and her heart problems. Bonnie has something going on that I think
is the start of asthma, and it sort of fits with what you've
posted. I need to get her in to a specialist.

You could try to get xrays, or an ultrasound and that could tell you a lot
right there, even without a specialist. Good luck. I hope it is nothing.

Me too. Boy, she ate her food with the pumpkin in it right up.

I'm so pleased that these might be signs that Pearl is feeling better,
Karen.
I cannot offer you any advice about cat diarrhoea (that's how we spell it
here ;-) ), or pred or heart problems.  If it was dogs, yes, I have
experience in all of these, but I'm sure it's not the same in cats.
Nothing is!!

I decided I just have to do what is reasonable, go by how she looks and acts
and not worry overly. As long as her tail is up and she is eating and
drinking, peeing and pooping (though I wish it were harder poop at least she
IS pooping.), she must be doing OK. She is not as cranky as she used to be
and that worries me, but maybe she hasn't felt well since she came to me,
and that is why she was cranky. I don't know. Time will tell I guess.
