Marina's on the Island and, therefore, incommunicado, so she might not
answer you for a few weeks.

The other Finn responding. :)
Apparently the winner, Margo Uusorg, and his brother have dominated the
sport for the last eight years. Taisto Miettinen, who was in second
place now for the fourth time is Finnish tho.
The NBA star Dennis Rodman was supposed to do his bit too, but
"chickened out". ;) He apparently had injured his leg, and that combined
with seeing the toughness of the sport had him doubting if he was in a
good enough shape to pull though.
There were other celebrities competing too, local and foreign, such as
the latest Miss Finland in the "wife-department" (she and her carrier
finished 13th), one of our members of parliament (Tony Halme) ending up
30th and a five time Tour-de-France champion (in the 70's) Roger De
Vlaeminck, who, being the oldest carrier this year, finished in 17th place.
Among the contesting couples were also chosen the
- best dressed - Adam Cayley and Laura Alton, London, England
- funniest - Janne Hinkkanen and Rosita Romström, Imatra Finland who
were dressed as "lion hunters"
- strongest carrier - Paul Ropbert (not sure if that's a typo) from
Ireland carrying Julia Calvin
There were over 60 reporters from 9 countries and 7 tv-crews from 5
countries covering the event.

There are some photos on the ESPN site (links in the other thread

I got a good giggle from the ESPN columnist who took part (links in
the other thread about the championship), who wrote about the
popularity of the "Estonian Carry" (the "wife" is carried hanging
upside down the "husband's" back). He then went on to quote the
Canadian couple who told him about how, while competing in Ontario,
they accidentally invented the "Reverse Estonian Carry" (wife carried
hanging upside down the husband's front....)
This entire event sounds like a great time, Christine. Is it a big
tourist attraction?

It sure seems to be quite a tourist attraction, judging by the reporters
and camera-crews from various countries covering the event. There is
more info with pictures about it on the organizing town of Sonkajärvi's
website at
http://www.sonkajarvi.fi/
You'll find the English bit by clicking on "Wife Carrying" on the left
hand side.

I'm afraid the Estonians take it much more seriously than the Finns ever
have. ;o)
