No, not really. He identified the problem as pyothorax but as of late
last week had not identified the microogranism responsible. That bothers
me - I'd feel a lot better if I knew what microbeast caused it.

Specific microbeasts aside, are there any clues as to what caused the
bug to go off like that? A blow? A scratch? A bite?

When we saw the local vet for a followup last week he suggested it could
have been something as simple as a foxtail that was inhaled and got
stuck someplace.

You might ask if the clinical presentation would be consistent with
mycoplasma or ureaplasma infection, which won't culture out with
standard media.

And isn't treatable with some classes of antibiotics.

True. I don't know the specific combination used, but Dan did mention
that the cocktail contained three.  It's a good question. "Shotgun"
therapy for an unknown infection tends to vary with the geographic
region.

Macrolides, fluoroquinolones, and tetracyclines all have activity.
While I'd tend to think of a basic cocktail around here as a
penicillinase-resistant semisynthetic penicillin or a third-generation
cephalosporin, an aminoglycoside and metronidazole, the vet could have
used azithromycin rather than a beta-lactam drug, and/or a
fluoroquinolone rather than, say, gentamicin.

I'll ask. I'm going to be sending them a fax this evening, so I'll
include that question.
